In all seriousness though, Rally Ready, which is fairly close to you, still does truck events on their off-road dirt coarse. @Lucario Runner and I have already discussed going back out there for more. In his truck. We need to make this happen where you join. You'd love it!

I may not be able to make my truck do that, but it sounds like fun! We had a rally event up here that was mostly in a field, and it was determined that my truck was too low to compete without doing serious damage to the underside.

Count me in man, that does sound like a blast. It would need to be sometime around late April early May for me to have the time, but i am definitely interested.

I bet your truck is loads of fun on the road course though! Its hard to make them do everything lol. Speaking of which, how is the progress coming of getting your little 4 banger going again? I think i read somewhere about that a while back that you were working on her again.

I replaced the rod bearings at the end of last summer and got it to the last race of the year. It ran great, no knocks or catastrophic failures. Drove it on the street maybe 50 miles and celebrated a buddy coming back from deployment by burning the tires off it. So long story short, the new rod bearings have already held up to a lot of abuse.

The $80 LUK clutch is starting to either slip or chatter again, not surprising with what I do to it on stock everything. I didn't resurface the flywheel last time I changed the clutch, just hit it with some scotch bright, so I bet it's in need of a new flywheel now too. Currently looking into rebuilding the steering rack and replacing the PS pump as soon as it warms up enough to get it out of my shed. Also needs a brake job since I've never touched them since I got the truck and started abusing it three years ago.

And last but not least, I'm buying a haltech here soon from @MrCrowntown so I'll be doing that too. Lots of stuff planned!

Hell yeah, that is awesome that you have already got it going and put it through a stress test as well! And we're gonna need a video next time you decide to light them up like that:D

If you're going to buy a new flywheel, i really love the LCE lightweight steel one for our trucks. Its a little tougher to get going in first, but you get used to it quick. How many miles is on your truck? Sounds like you've got a good list going to keep you busy. Im interested in hearing how you plan on rebuilding the P/S rack when you get around to it. I will probably need to put that on my maintenance list as well since mine is the original.

Do you have a plan for tuning the Haltech? and keeping it N/A for now or what's the plan?

Lightened flywheel and the Pro clutch from LCE is magic!

It's sitting at 200k miles currently, as far as I know it's the original rack but it's leaking. I've boiled the fluid many times, and the pump is wetter than a nun in a cornfield.

I ended up using an old cylinder head to chock the front tires and got it into third gear in my shed. Apparently there was smoke rolling out of there for 15minutes to a half hour after we did that, but we had hidden inside since it was 11:30 at night :D my neighbor has two chevelles, and when I saw him a couple days later he said he was waiting to hear us do it again so he could show us what a real burnout was

I've also got a factory mechanical LSD I'm going to be swapping into the rear as well, I think it's a 3.12 ratio like my current open setup so not too much different there.

I've found a couple seal kits online, but I need to do some more research before buying one. I'll probably do new tie rods and bushings while I have everything torn apart. As for the haltech, one of the guys I race with runs a company here in Maine that specializes in dyno tuning for Subarus. He's familiar with haltech and said he would be happy to help me tune it, but I'm going to be trying to do it mostly on my own. I'll start with it N/A but I'll likely turbo it this coming winter or next summer. I'm definitely doing the LCE lightweight flywheel, but I'm on the fence about putting an expensive clutch in it when I plan to turbo it soon and blow past the torque that the pro clutch holds.

This may be the year I finally get around to doing a build thread on this pig

Hahah that’s awesome, sounds like a real smoke show. no better american welcome home than than a good burnout and a cold one:rofl:

neighbor sounds cool too hahah, are you challenging me?:D

Is that 3.12 LSD rear end out of an x-runner? That will be a nice upgrade

that will be nice to have someone who is familiar with it if you have questions. Id like to be able to tune my own as well but i think it’s above my pay grade lol.

Are you going with a built block or how much power are you planning on making? Definitely looking forward to seeing your build thread when it comes about

Installed my ECGS bushing today in my 4.10 front diff. Everything is ready now for the AWD conversion so whenever I get some time to take the truck out of service, I can measure for and order driveshafts and then install everything.

It is the 3.12 out of an x-runner. I currently do 75 mph in 2nd, so I don't think I'll see much difference in that aspect. As far as the built block, if I don't score the engine from crowntown I'll be boosting my stock engine to 7lbs before upgrading to the full kit from LCE and trying to push 20+lbs

I fully approve of the red neck bearing installer tool. I've made and used many of those in my few years of millwright experience.

I just need to invest in some new LCA's, rear bump stops, and maybe a spindle gusset and truck should be good for rally ready. plus there is also another called Austin Rally project which is basically flat rally stuff.

That sounds like a good plan to me! I have been stoked with how mine runs even with the stock bottom end. The sc never came close to being this good as far as drivability
Yeah my front end could use a rebuild probably before doing this. It is overdue for tie rods and a shock refresh
That is actually the tool ECGS sells! it worked okay for what it is but it took quite a few whacks to hammer it home

I pulled the trigger on a set of Trail gear bomb proof poly motor mounts for the 3rz to try and make work with my 2TR-FE as well as some OEM motor mounts to compare them to. Hopefully they don’t require too much modification to fit. As it stands right now when I get hard on the gas in first, the engine shifts over to the passenger side and causes the downpipe to hit the ac lines. I am hoping this will help remedy that

    Buddy,
Now trust me that X-runner rear 3rd. member if I’m not mistaken is closer to a 3.15 and I’m sure the “clutch’s” are probably shot but better than nothing. Now for the part I don’t want to say is you are going the wrong way. You really should be looking for a 3.58 (from a 5 lug automatic) or a 3.73 from ALL 05-15 Tacoma’s some first Gen. Taco’s, T-100’s and first Gen. Tundra and Sequoias. But some of these came in different ratios.
    The 3.15 & 3.31 is a different carrier than the 3.58, 3.73, 3.91, 4.10 and I *believe* the lowest was a 4.30 from the factory in a 8.4 rear. But what’s really interesting is that the 8.4 is actually a 8.25” gear.
Especially with the meets you’re running on that poor little 5 lug! Get some lower gears then transfer the LS 3rd over.

While it's true that a 3.15 isn't enough of a move upwards in gearing for my N/A truck, I'm going to be going turbo in the next year or so. With the current courses I'm autocrossing on, I only use 2nd, since it goes up to 75mph with the 3.10 (or close to that) stock 5 lug ratio. Even with a short shifter, the length of time to get from second to third, and then instantly back to second when I hit a turn, its far quicker and smoother to just buzz the limiter for a second. Once I get the haltech in I'm going to bump my rev limiter up at least 500-800 rpm to help alleviate that issue. The gentleman I picked the LSD up from, just had new bearings and clutches put in it. He also included a second one if I want to mess with adding a clutch pack or not.

Ok but you do know you should have a 3.31 in a 5 lug manual from the factory. Just an FYI when I went from the stock 215/70-15 (26.8”) to the 245/50-19 (28.6”) tire I went from the 3.31 gear to the 3.73. This one change almost equaled the Supercharger for giddyup. The best mods I have done in order is wheels, rubber and gear. The second best was the StopTech’s, then the DIY coil overs and suspension mods. The supercharger is nice but even with the good guy price I wouldn’t do it again. It runs every bit as good if not better than the Rotrex POS with the big intercooler. But I guess deep down inside I wanted to LS swap it from the beginning.
Again the gear swap was worth EVERY penny!

Well my downpipe has cracked right around where i hammered the hell out of it to clearance the AC lines. So i will be trying my luck at repairing that this weekend. I think i'm going to try and repair it and then once i get more time i will be completely rebuilding it and routing over near the valve cover more.
