    Hi all,

I just had my timing belt replaced (yesterday) at the dealer with the complete Aircabinman kit which included drive belts, rollers, and seals. I popped the hood today to see how things were doing and I noticed a surprising amount of wear on the alternator belt (pictured). The precious belt did not show any wear before removal. Any idea what would cause this wear pattern? Defective belt? Over-tightening? Whatever the cause, does this look like something I need to urgently replace?

    Appreciate the input.

So hard to tell from a picture.

I wonder was a used belt installed?

That sure does not look new.

Any interesting new sounds coming from the engine bay.

I would talk to the Service Manager but with you supplying parts you might be told " Sorry nothing we can do"

I would have a extra belt in hand if you do not keep a extra.

Agreed. I went back and verified what the old belt looked like from some photos I took and it didn’t show any wear at all. If this is a belt defect, the dealership won’t cover it. However, if it’s an issue with the install, they will. Not sure how to determine which of those was the problem.

A very hard call to make.

You did inspect the new belts with the rest of the new parts.

The chances of getting only one bad belt in a production lot has to be very small. Reach out To AirCabinman see if anyone else received defective belts.

    Good Luck.

Check the smooth pulleys and see if there any gouges or scratches. All that wear is on the smooth side of the belt.

Tacoma use no smooth pulley that ride on the 5vz, 3rz, 2rz engine. Alt pulley to crank to fan back to alt, all on the groove side

Look to be stretched from over tightening

Wait, did you said dealership? I'm surprised toyota dealership actually allowed that. All toyota dealer in the past will not do any work unless you buy the parts from them.

I thought that was rather strange myself.

Many dealers installed customer supplied parts during frame swaps so maybe Op`s dealer said Why Not.
