First off, my truck is a 2006 V6 6spd double cab with 360,000kms(225,000 miles) I am scrambling to get the 4WD working because winter in quickly coming. (NL, Canada)
The history of my 4x4 problems goes back about 3 years ago. It started with the dreaded flashing light, which I fixed thanks to you guys, by soldering the ADD motor connections.
I then had more trouble a while after that with the ADD again because of lack of use I guess. The motor wasn't spinning, and with a little help I got it running again. And, once again the 4WD was working again.
Then the real trouble started about a year and a half ago. Without going into too much detail; I have replaced and tested the TC actuator and position sensors. I have repaired a broken wire that I found on the 4Lo sensor connector. And most recently I tried to manually jog the ADD actuator using a 9V battery on pins 1&2 to no avail. I read on here somewhere that 9V is enough to run the little motor inside??
Assuming I've done everything right, I will have to pull the ADD again( 3rd time). My question is, if the motor is the culprit, can I just change out the little motor inside instead of replacing the whole actuator. I seen a post on here before where someone bought a Chinese motor that fit inside, just not sure how that worked out after?? I now cannot find the thread. If anyone could share their experience on this matter it would be awesome! I'm trying to save a few bucks here, but if reliability is going to be an issue, I'll just purchase a new actuator.
I don't know what I would do without this forum! Haha...you guys have saved me thousands over the years!! Thanks

    I wouldn’t change anything.
    I see @Dm93 in here.
Just use his diagnosis guide to figure out the real problem.

    Yes! DM93 is Guru!!!
But I would like to comment on your suggestion on buying a “Chinese motor” that just makes me ill reading those words with all the issues you are having I would think that would be the last thing you would want to do and have to open it up a fourth time

    Thanks guys. Will do!
    @Geeves77 I hear ya! Haha
But, if someone has done the swap, and hasn't had any issues, I'm willing to give it a shot if it will save hundreds of dollars!

Take some diagnostic readings before throwing throwing good money after bad.

So what you are saying is, throwing a doorman actuator at the problem before knowing what the problem actually is, is a bad idea?

I'd echo the previous: do the step-by-step voltage checklist. It should take you far less time than an actuator R&R and will likely pin-point the exact problem. The most recent troubleshooting here following that thread turned out to be a dissasssemble-clean and re-lube solution performed externally without necessitating removing the entire actuator from the transfer case. Re: aftermarket: I wouldn't do it. Even if it fixes the problem, you'll be doing it again: and it won't be 16 years or 360,000kms(225,000 miles) from now. (whichever comes first)

I'm sure it would be possible to replace the motor providing you can find one with the same specs and the rest of the actuator is in good condition.

I watched a YouTube video where the guy had water collecting in his front ADD and the small electric motor inside was ruined. He listed a 6 or 8 digit model number for a small motor he found on EBay or Amazon that fit and worked fine. I have been trying to find the video again but can't locate it but the electric motor part number was listed in the comments. Good luck!

That's the one! I'll keep searching I guess. I'm probably just going to drop $350+ for a Aisin one though. But, if anyone out there finds the post, or the video of the motor/ part#, please let me know. Thanks

After determining the A.D.D. motor was shot(No movement when manually jogged), I went ahead and purchased an Aisin A.D.D. actuator from Rockauto. I made sure to take off the cover and solder the motor terminals before installing. And....drumroll....it worked! It's the first time my 4wd has been working properly in almost 2 years. I hope I.never see that blinking light again! Haha
So, just to reiterate...I had to change out both actuators, test the limit switches, and re-connect a broken 4Hi sensor wire. It wasn't cheap, but the money I saved in garage labour costs was huge!
I couldn't have done it without the help of everyone on Tacomaworld! Thanks

Great news! Glad to see you're up a running again! Also, consider this: When it comes to a Tacoma 4x4 system, at this point in time you are now probably at a higher experience level than most Technicians at a dealership: in Diagnosis, R&&, and Electronics. (IMO)

Is the Aisin actuator you purchased from Rockauto the same part (OEM) as from a dealership? If so, you made right decision and is money well spent (IMO).

    Thanks @Williston
I do believe Aisin is owned by Toyota.
