I think we're going to see a major reduction in the number of configurations available. What's the current number - 23?

That won't necessarily be a bad thing.

The use of this hybrid system isn’t intended for efficiency gains though, it’s a performance upgrade. It’s intended to give the truck better torque characteristics while filling in the gaps between the turbos spooling up. Its offers a smooth power delivery. You’re paying for that extra 100 pound ft of torque and 50 hp. The engine has more torque at lower rpm than the regular F-150 raptor. If you told me 8 years ago Toyota would have one of the best performing engines in the full size category, one with better Torque than a raptor I wouldn’t have believed you. The same will be true of the 4th gen taco. The fact that Toyota is giving the pro an actual engine performance upgrade is a step in the right direction. The current pro aside from rarity and resale value doesn’t offer an equal level of performance for the price increase. Just some better shocks which get blown away by a good aftermarket set up.

None of the other Mid-Sized Trucks get 25 MPG, so highly doubt the Tacoma will either.

This seems like an odd strategy for Toyota. For the last 25 years they have marketed hybrids as saving fuel and the environment. The average consumer thinks hybrid means better mpg. Now they are going to market them as just a performance upgrade? That seems strange especially with the current EV/hybrid craze going on.

You might want to look that up. Most of them can get 25 mpg.

I did look it up prior in this thread, if my memory is correct not a single one had an overall average of 25 except for the Diesel GM Twins that are discontinued.

I assumed we were talking highway mpg.

Gotcha, I was using Fuel Economy.Gov for overall Mileage, a version of the Ranger was best at 23.

The traditional parallel hybrid systems Toyota refined aren’t great for truck applications apparently. Fords f150 hybrid uses lithium ion batteries which allows consumers to use the the truck as a power bank like the lightning which is cool. I’m guessing Toyota went with an old school nickel hydride batteries because they have a proven reputation of lasting a really long time in other applications and know their trucks reputations hinge on longevity. Classic Toyota. I do agree though that it’s a little weird from a marketing perspective.

I think the F150 hybrid gets quite a bit better mpg than the non hybrid options. It doesn’t make much sense that Toyota wouldn’t do the same. They’re brand new models are already behind their competitors.

Missed opportunity if the Tacoma hybrid's sole reason for existence is low-end torque. If thats the case I'll just roll with the venerable V6 until until someone (Ford, most likely) pushes the envelope with a more efficient hybrid mid-size truck.

I think the hybrid ford is rated at 24 mpg combined while the Toyota is rated at 20. I also think the domestics have always been more optimistic about their epa ratings. Toyota has always lagged in mpg compared to the domestics as well. Also it’s a significant jump from the last gen. I struggled to get over 13 when I rented a 2019 tundra for a couple weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new taco got at least 24 mpg combined though, now that the new tundra is making the same mpg as my truck which is decent considering how much heavier it is.

No everyone else just has BS numbers that are never seen in the real world. I've always seen Toyota mpg ratings are very close to the real world.

I remember seeing something like GM taking the spare tire off and a bunch of other stuff during there fuel test just so they could post better numbers.

I’ll take reliability and longevity over an mpg war, it’s a truck after all. They moved the needle enough that mpg is acceptable in comparison to the 5.7, but nothing to write home about. I’m sure the taco will follow the same path. Ford has always pushed the envelope, but because of that their owners are accustomed to thinking 200k is high mileage.

Let me guess... It's going to be more complex, have more technology, heavier, expensiver, and less reliable.

I'd like to see simpler, lighter, cheaper, but that's just me...

If a highlander can avg 22/29 with the 2.4t I’m sure a Tacoma can as well

I believe the new 4 banger Highlander gets the same MPG as the previous 3.5 V6, so most likely the Tacoma will be similar.
