Where Have You Off-Roaded Today? 3rd Gen

Glorious day trying to get up to Big Bear. More on that in a bit. Unfortunately heading up Stoner days was not paying attention and when I say I’m not kidding. I’m not fucking kidding. Once again, the Taco gets initiated into a slamming contest. Out of nowhere, the craziest thump I have felt. If not the second. (Pay attention to the trial, not the scenery) I felt the entire truck’s weight slam against the right front tire and we came to a slamming halt. It fell into a ditch and not having stepped on the brakes, the hit was insane. An M1 tank coming down a sand dune and coming to a crashing halt ain’t got nothing on this hit. I thought bent tie rods for sure.

I didn’t notice much until we got back near the entrance we took. I was like whaaat? So we get back to the highway and alls I remember is when we got on the trail the steering was spot on. So I look down at the steering wheel once we were going straight on the highway, it was just about the 9:00 position I had to say goodbye to my nephew and his kids and alls I can say is Moss Toyota kicked some butt to get the alignment back.

And then there was Hungry Valley heading up to Pronghorn’s sandstone wall on the trail when all of a sudden…. , man, the entire front truck’s weight dropped and got slammed against the RCI skid plate something fierce. It could make a grown man cry.

But you want to know the truth?

Toyota builds tough trucks, that I do declare

Ultimately, it would take a fool to try. We couldn’t go any further. The past rains done a number EVERYWHERE. Although it was fun, sand/gravel can collapse in a heartbeat. They’re going to have to bring a dozer to help recunstruct this road.

 

We went off on a little adventure this weekend, traveling across WA State, along the Columbia River, to the Valley of the Giants in Oregon with a few Yota Friends.

 

Too late, I’m sending you coordinates and you’re showing the gang how it’s done. This cat gone erasing his post. Probably sat down a bit and pondered a pucker. Lol

just another -38c Saskatchewan drive home. about to turn onto the grid to the farm. The taco has been amazing so far in the cold and snow. but it also has a nice heated garage at home waiting for it.

 

Do you use a block heater when you are away from your homes heated garage?

 

Absolutely. also have a nice cozy battery blanket on. Also upgraded instantly to a bigger battery. its all about those cold cranking amps. tomorrow is supposed to be -42c.

 

I too once had a heated garage, and also tried using a block heater when away, big mistake. Spent a few months having to park on the street. Luckily, I recently found a new heated garage, learned my lesson and won't be using a block heater anymore.

 

Recently went up to Rowher Flats here in SoCal with a couple of friends and coworkers on President's day. No one else wanted to baptize their truck in mud beside me haha.

 

For the most part block heaters work fine. Been using them for 50+ years in Alberta. Just need to "warm up" the vehicle for 5-10 before driving. Then go conservatively until engine fully to temp. Block heaters are less expensive than heating a whole garage. Actually better for your ride and the environment.

 

without block heaters in Saskatchewan there would be no vehicles going anywhere at -40c. last winter was the worst. we had 2 weeks of -50c. i work nights so the truck has to sit out all night. block heater is plugged in. battery blanket plugged in. i try to run out on my breaks to start and run it for 20min a couple times a night. good times.

Idyllwild, CA. Tons of fresh snow

 

Finally got a break in the weather and it warmed up to 7 so I hit a local spot...
And got stuck.

 

I didn't get any photos but this evening I jumped in to help for a 90's Expedition that was stuck up Reecer Creek nearby, it was deep into the ditch along the side of the road way up in the hills. The owners had to be rescued yesterday by the local Sheriffs. It took about 15 pulls with the kinetic rope but I was able to get them out, and headed back down the hill.
