Most of the time a rod bearing = oil starvation.

Guys, say it with me: those 3.5 v6 are built for emissions and not for reliability.

That diagnosis is an assumption. Still truly unknown, unless it would be torn down.

Your telling us he figured all this out with a stethoscope? No other test, physical examination? That would be like a Dr. Using a stethoscope, listening to your lungs and saying you have lung cancer, your going to die. Without performing any other test

How did cylinder look, spark plug look, did he bore scope it? Leak down test?, compression test? Was pan pulled, rod caps, micro gauged/plastic gauge measured/test.

Sounds to me as a total assumption by this tech.

No rental cars in my town, plus I have to commute 450 kms one way to get to my work, then drive back after a week. A month of rental cars would be an astronomical bill, even for a small budget option around $90/day. Forget that.

And I don't believe for a second your telling of Toyota spec for oil consumption. Should be nil to none. My wife's Sienna, 220,000 km, doesn't use of burn any.

The engine in my Tacoma is on it's way out, please read or re read my reply I posted yesterday.

Thanks for the positive vibes and reassurance. By some of the reply's I still see there is plenty of skepticism about what the tech did. Do some people really expect a tech to tear the motor apart to determine what is wrong? God that what cost $$$ just for that.

Anyway, ya it sucks, and I'm very unsure of how to go forward. Probably have to trade in, gain more negative equity, and pay close to $500/ bi weekly. Yay, what a deal!

No, it is the sign of a good experienced tech. Why would he tear the motor apart, then put all the used/worn out pieces back in, just to say it has a fail bearing? And don't compare this to a human getting a lethal disease, talk about apples to oranges.

and to do the majority of test you are talking about, the engine would need to be pulled. Would be an extravagant amount of money. Even at a Toyota shop, they would not do this.

I went through this with Toyota back in the 90's and that's where I found out about what they consider excessive oil consumption. You are living in a fantasy world if you think that just because it say Toyota on the label that you should not burn a drop of oil. Nil was the word you used. That's just not realistic. And what the fuck do you do when you need service or you have a breakdown or you have an accident and you actually have to rent a car. You appear to have no backup or even a backup plan and are expecting this truck to be the actual mythical perfect vehicle. Good luck to you.

No engine will last with poor maintenance.

Thanks for the update. Sorry you are dealing with this, either way. I'm not sure if it's different for Canada but in the US, they recommend oil every 10k miles (16k km). Some people swear by it and will point to their own used oil analysis. I've always been slightly skeptical of this but would assume the original owner perhaps went longer than 10k, but who knows for sure. Oil is always cheaper than a new engine. Even my dealership recommends every 5k rather than the 10k that Toyota says.

your original post said nothing of noise just blue smoke on startup, that's almost always just valve stem seals and this engine I've seen some posts about that specifically the '17, don't quote me though.

to determine bad bearings it require a tear down...some rod knocks can be heard...but a confirmation requires an actual LOOK, not a stethoscope...but since later posts state noise, well that just sounds like as others have said, sounds like the engine was ran dry.

toyota is known for longevity in most of their engines. hell even the ones that "do bad", like my early 2000's camry 4cyl with some having sticking piston rings, still actually outlast most "well built" domestics
