New SR5 Access Cab, how in the world do you get into the back seat??

When I shopped for my new SR5 Access Cab, I took the test drive and all that. The one thing I didn't think to look at was getting into the back seats. I've had Tacomas for 35 years, and used the back seat to keep my tools and stuff. I actually never had one newer than 1st gen, so I never ran into this before. After I took it home, it was a few days before I got around to transferring all the junk from my beloved 2002 SR5, and was stunned to find that even with the passenger seat slid as far forward as it goes, I just about can't get into the back. The old one gave me enough of a gap between the rear end of the seat and the door post, that it was just a bit of a squeeze getting in, and to get anything from the back I could easily lean in and get it. With the new one, the door post is just about exactly at the back of the seat, so I have to hold on to the top of the seat while I lift under my leg with my left hand to get my foot over the gap. Even just leaning in to get a tool or something, I almost can't get through the gap without turning sideways. I'm an average size, so this can't have escaped the designers, and if they didn't see it, at least the folks at the factory would have given them some feedback.

Am I missing something? Is there a trick to getting in back? Is there some way of releasing the seat to move it farther forward?

Sorry this sounds like a quirky question. Bizarre, actually. I'm just flummoxed.

    Thanks

I just got a silver 2020 version of your truck a month ago, great truck! I also live in Nh (just north of Franconia notch). The access cab has the semi-secret rear doors. Right near the rear seatbelts and windows there’s a vertical handle that pops the door open. Without it you can’t really access the back. Honestly, I completely understand how you didn’t know they were there. Back in the day my old access cab trucks didn’t have this sneaky rear door and you did need to slide seats forward. Grappone should’ve shown you this when you went to get the truck. But, I’m sure now that you know what to do you’ll love the truck even more!

keeping posting and asking questions, even if you think they may be silly! We’ll never know answers unless we ask questions.

    hope you enjoy the truck!!

This is fully legit. I'm not stupid, I was just ignorant.

Like I said, I've had a winning streak for 35 years. My first was a Toyota Pickup, a used one for $600 back in 1987. Before Tacoma even. There was no back seat. I don't remember which was the first of my trucks with back seats, but it was great to have that. And I never had back doors, you just slithered in, but it was not that hard. Somewhere along the line I learned there was a version that had rear doors, but that wasn't anything I cared about. The only humans I ever had to carry was when my granddaughters came to visit from California.

A couple of years ago, when I first started wondering how long my old 2002 would last before the state said I couldn't drive it on the public roads anymore, I learned (or thought I did) that the two styles in the new ones were called Access Cab and Double Cab. So I guess I jumped to the conclusion that Access Cab meant you slither in, and Double Cab meant back doors.

So there it is, yes? Access Cab (at least for 2023) has doors back there. VERY happy to learn I was wrong.

And I hope the worst of it is that some of you had some fun with me.

    Thanks again

Haha glad you can take a joke and you've learned about suicide doors. Next you'll find out how much of a pain it is to load groceries into the back in a parking lot... you have to do the door shimmy to get to the cart.
