Gio! This build is absolutely exactly what I have been shooting for and I found you via YouTube. Thank you so much for posting your progress! How have the headers been holding up? I have a brand new motor going into my 98 4runner right now and figured might as well do some cool shit with it before I put it in... ie... turbo system. I just don't know anything about turbos themselves so I don't know what to get. I would rather do all of this myself rather than spending extra money on sending it to a shop since I am rather mechanically savy. Just don't know what turbo lol. Any advice? I have two separate thoughts on this. Either I go straight to methanol injection with higher boost or do I keep it at 5psi and just do an intercooler..... so many decisions....

I say shoot for it. The stock fuel system can only support an 11.5 AFR (with boost signal to the FPR) up to about 5 PSI of boost, so anything above that will require either bigger injectors and tune or methanol injection. 5-10 PSI with methanol injection with no intercooler will bring the air intake temps down below that of an intercooler without meth injection and that’s why I ditched my intercooler. My 66-62 Amazon turbo might be a little big for some people on this platform but I absolutely love it and it’s still in perfect condition… now pushing 10 PSI. The truck absolutely screams. The CXRacing headers are also in perfect shape and I highly recommend them!

I made a heat shield for the intake to encourage the turbo to suck in air from the outside instead of the heat soaked engine bay… temps now generally read 10 degrees higher than atmospheric instead of 30+ above.

still no plans for an intercooler?

Heck no. After a big highway pull, I can quickly pull over, open the hood and see condensation on the intake manifold from how cool the methanol evaporating in the intake makes it and it feels almost refrigerator cool to the touch. I had an intercooler earlier in the build but ditched it when I installed the methanol injection system.

i have meth too but it only activates with a few pdi of boost. during normal light driving it doesnt ever activate. thats where the intercooler would help a bit.

Well light driving typically doesn’t involve boost and the intake air doesn’t heat up much unless it’s compressed, so I really don’t think it would matter. My meth controller starts spraying at 1 PSI and gradually increases flow based on boost so any heat created by compressing the air is cooled immediately.
