What a thread to revive on Super Sunday.

I graduated HS and joined the USAF after 9 months of DEP (Delayed Entry Program).

My ASVAB scores weren't great but I was able to get a Materials Facilities Specialist career started.

I worked in the warehouse first doing Storage & Issue and then Night Shift Support for MICAP. (Mission Capable)

It took me 10 years but I finally got an office job in Stock Control. That opened the door for my first Special Duty assignment to a Regional Supply Squadron at HQ/PACAF Hickam AFB, HI.

That experience led to a consecutive HQs assignment...this time to HQ/USAFE at Ramstein, Germany.

I closed out my later years (2006-2011) at (1) Dover, AFB DE, (2) Short Tour 365 to Iraq, and then (3) Aviano, Italy. (I retired out of Aviano)

Being a west coast guy, I had no regrets in having our family settle in Delaware.

Current position is my 8th job (and longest tenured) since I retired in 2011.

Seems I have enjoyed jobs with a Support Role.

As a kid, I looked at Mike Brady's job as something I wanted to do. Turns out, my son-in-law is the Architect in our family.

I did hourly work for years. You get treated like a child by management. Now I'm salaried, making 2x as much as I was hourly and I'm treated like an adult. I can show up to the office when I want, leave when I want, work from home when I want, take lunch when I want for however long I want. I don't bring the work I do home with me, so there's no stress wondering what I'll be doing the next day or what I screwed up the day prior. Also, the pay ceiling for me is about 4x the max hourly is.

    Currently: Registered Nurse

Pros: I work 3 nights a week for 12 hrs, pay is good (6 figures a year, if youre a new grad youll probably already make 75k a year) where I'm at (ucla), potential for a lot of growth, potential to go into different fields of nursing and no shortage of jobs

Cons: A lot of people just dont get how toxic working bedside is especially if youve never had any sort of experience in healthcare. In CA we're lucky to have ratios but I cant imagine what its like in other places that dont. Youll also encounter the occasional dumb boss who only worked bedside 6 months, went into management and expects everything to be ideal. Also getting into better positions means having to get your masters degree in nursing so its more school. The salary growth for nurses imo isnt as good as other fields. Its great cause you start out pretty high but I feel like in 7-10yrs time you kinda plateau if you arent pursuing something higher and if you work somewhere that doesnt have annual raise/union contracts etc

The do over: something in computers because I feel like that BOOMED and another field that isnt going away soon. If I still would be a nurse I wouldve done school, gotten my masters right away and I'd find a cush position (there is a lot). An astronaut would be kinda cool too.

What does your brother do? How many hours does he work? How much traveling do he do?
Yes you can make good money welding but you have to sacrifice everything. Meanwhile there’s ALOT of jobs with degrees that pay $100k working 40-50 hours and home every night with paid holidays and benefits.

What kind of business, sounds like a parts distributor of such? Hence the inventory comment.
Cough, grass is not always greener, but for a person with a family it would be appealing which is why coworkers seem to stay here, or they're too lazy to jump ship. The difference about working in a heavy industry or trade is you can lose your job on day one and find a new one for more money, with bonus the next day for a company absolutely needing a welder, HVAC person, diesel mechanic etc.

In the office job setting, its generally a process to get a new job unless you are an all star, "know somebody" as the saying goes, or can interview for month while fully employed and land something.

I also supply a lot of brake parts to smaller businesses that used to be our customers that got tired of dealing with the "new" company....wholesale accounts for about 2/3rds of the business (at least it did last year). Moving forward, I'm going to be down one customer that I did $100K with last year (the same outfit bought them too and I want no business relationship with them), so I'll have to make that up somewhere...

So far…. Added fog lights swapped halogens to led’s, interior lights to led’s, bed lights added, led/strobe brake lights, trying to figure out the right leds for turn signals.

My job sent me to work in Germany the summer of 2012. They offered me a position to stay there. I should have taken that offer. I loved it there. It was just west of Munich.

I'm a carpenter and have been for 25 years. If I could start over I'd be a carpenter. I get paid very well and can work almost anywhere I decide to go.

I work in corporate finance. It's interesting at times, but I came from a family of doctors and engineers. I thought I was too dumb for either of those routes, but if I could do it over I think I'd at least try.
