    Work in progress...
California is so expensive to renew registration every year. I paid 600 bucks to renew my 2017 this year. You have to put tires and maintain the second vehicle and find a place to park it. If I move over to America I may look at getting a cool hot rod to drive on the nice weather days.

For me, it's my 80 series - driven very little, if at all, in winter months to prevent corrosion.

It rots all frames out not just Tacoma frames. When my buddy and I rebuilt my S10 once we got the box off we beat on the frame with ball peen hammers and the rust was coming off in sheets. The only really bad areas were under the box way in back by the tail lights so we went ahead with the project.

Then we sealed the hell out of the outside and sprayed the shit out of the inside with fluid film. I hose it down each fall with 5 cans of fluid film. That said, what will most likely kill that S10 for good is the frame will probably break someplace we can't weld it. Other things people don't think about is the road chemicals also destroy every line, hose, bushing, seal and boot.

On my S10 every brake and fuel line has been replaced, some have been replaced twice. Ditto for boots and bushings. It got a new fuel system from a new tank and fill tube all the way to the injectors. On and on everything has been replaced.

The ZR2 went from GM indigo blue to forest green, lots of work but worth it now.

It should be an easy fix, by the clicking when I hit the button it sounds like the cable spring slipped off the sleeve on the side of the differential. I have replaced the 4WD activation system once and it's not too bad. There is a vacuum activator switch on top of the transfer case, a big vacuum actuator under the battery tray and a cable that runs from the actuator to the transfer case.

All the cable does is pull a sleeve over a spline and bang, you are in 4WD. The clicking tells me everything is working except the sleeve isn't getting pulled. I will probably just cut the weak spring connector off the cable and install one of those tiny cable clamps instead.

First picture she is rusted out, gone. Gaping holes filled with spray foam, bondo and painted over.

A few pictures of the rebuild process. Body donor truck was a rust free 2000 Sonoma from Tennessee. Cab corners, rocker panels and other body parts were aftermarket and Scott fabricated new cab mounts and cut/welded in much of the floor.

It was fun, it was a hell of a risk but it was worth it and it was a great experience rebuilding the ZR2. I never could have done it without my good friend Scott who is an expert bodyman and painter. It was way more elbow grease than it was money.

That said I hate rust and will keep it off my Tacoma for as long as possible.

Mild winter so far this year, I'm thankful I've been able to go out and drive on dry roads once or twice a week. The ZR2 takes over when things get salty.

    Hopefully that trend keeps on!

My SoCal/Arizona FJ60 is stored and my built 470 is stored as well. The Tacoma is the winter car.
