I currently running a odyssey 34r battery and I’m trying to figure out if I can use an optima 34 yellow top for a dual battery setup without any issues.EB408172-A8D9-4F92-8E44-DA3FC46B7C93.jpgC1B27D0F-028C-4F2B-9072-065F012EE306.jpg

I believe since they are both AGM batteries it shouldn’t be an issue. You would work both to be the same if linked. If you run a DC charger between them like a redarc it won’t matter even if they were different. It’s generally good practice to keep the batteries the same when connected together.

How are you planning to run your dual setup?

Do your research on optima before buying one. I didn’t and it didn’t even last 3 years.

Nudavinci has it right. There is no need for a dual battery setup for the truck itself, it doesn't need the current availability two batteries in parallel supply to start it or operate the electrics. If you run a ton of lights, you're better off with a larger output alternator. If you have a self-contained camper, a large deep-cycle battery with a charging circuit is the better choice to supply the camper electrics separately.

I had just installed a yellow top when I came across a fair deal on a genesis dual kit. Wasn’t sure what to do with the optima but I figured it out.

Anyone solo over landing could certainly use a dual battery. Batteries, even new ones, can just up and quit. This leaves you stranded. My boat has dual batteries and the reason is that offshore, a dead battery could be a life threatening situation. So could being stuck 50 miles into nowhere. Cannot duplicate everything but a battery is a failure item and easy to double up on. And can be used to run air compressors for tires or camp lights regardless of the equipment on your camp trailer or other towed load.

I already have a optima battery. It was a gift from a friend that got it brand new from a raffle.

If they are both AGM ( they are) and both the same AH it would work. It’s generally recommended to have them both be the same unless you’re using a DC charger setup.

I spend a decent amount of time solo in places without cell reception that would require a day or more of travel on foot before I'd get to pavement. My battery setup is a 27 Northstar for the truck and a 100ah house battery in the bed on an isolator. The house battery only goes into the bed when I'm heading out and plan to use the fridge. Otherwise it's just the truck battery and and lipo jump pack.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
I will add that a 100w solar panel is a cheap and nice thing to have to keep those AGMs topped off…for the money it’s hard to beat.
It’s not by any means a necessity, just nice to keep the house battery topped off.

Well, my only issue with your method is toting about a heavy battery. I have done gotten old and I might just forget that battery and not have it when I need it. I also have an air compressor for inflating tires and standup paddle boards and my old Zodiac boat and some other stuff.
