Any woodworkers?

Btw, a friend of mine just bought that saw at HD. It’s cheaper if you buy it from them online, and comes with the stand!
It was next day delivery. He was thrilled.

 

I have the 8 1/4" saw, which I bought from HD. The stand it came with is better than the one on the 10", IMHO. When I get the bigger one I'll see of I can fit it on the other stand. Either way, I'll sell the smaller saw with a stand.

 

I do okay with what I have. I work mainly with "reclaimed" lumber I pick up free off Craigslist; mostly pine.

A cousin requested a planter to cover a specific size: 3'x8'. I managed to build for him two 3'x4' matching planters. The trick was getting them out the front door, which was not a consideration when I was assembling.

 

Then I built a cart for his smoker with the leftover cedar!

 

A couple of frames done and inside for finishing/drying.

Yeah but they don't taste very good.

 

If you're starting out sharpening, get one of these Tormek sharpening systems. Otherwise you'll start out with wet stones, then replace your lower grit wet stones with diamond plate while keeping your higher grit wet stones. Then you'll get tired of the whole moving stone to stone sharpening until your fingertips are raw. Buy once, cry once. The wheel and lapping compound is way easier than messing around with stones. Your fingers will thank you.

If you were making a bunch of these, would making a negative of the image stacked up 10-15 layers high help as a drop in form for glue ups? it would help align the pieces as you stack them up

 

I bought a decent set of diamond stones a while ago, but I keep using wet-sand sand paper. It works well enough for my purposes. Once I get into finer detail work I will probably make my way to the stones and strop. Or hell, I may just skip over the stones and buy a wheel... Lol

 

At 4 bucks a pop, they'd better taste good! Might as well spend the extra couple of bucks and get a box of Thin Mints!

 

I really like how the water stones cut, and once you get chisels flat on the back, sharpening is very quick and easy, 5 min tops. It's just getting the back right when you get them that's a pain. My new stones are far better (and faster) than the ones I bought 30 years ago.

 

The part that takes the longest is flattening the stones after prolonged use. I have some water stones and a flattening block. Periodically the stones need to be flattened which takes time, a lot of time, especially if they haven't been touched in a long time. I was sharpening out a nicked planar blade which put a nice cup in my 220 grit stone. It took a long time to get it flat again. With all the money and time I spent on stones and sharpening products and jigs, I should've just went with the Tormek system. Don't get me wrong, I love the finish the stones give me but time is money.

You do have a point there, When I got my first stones decades ago, nobody was mentioning flattening them. I picked up a flattening block with my new stones and damn, my old ones took some time to correct!
I guess if I was able to save enough at one time for a Tormek, I would have bought one, but buying a stone at a time is far less of a bite, even if the final cost is similar. lol

 

Thanks! Santa put them in my Christmas stocking. I do like them better than the painter’s pyramids that I used to use.

All of this talk about chisels makes me feel like a newbie. I only use chisels when I am using my Father In Laws lathe to make a bowl or handle.

 

I posted this in the Whiskey thread, too... but it's kind of a cross-over photo. I made this for a buddy's birthday. The box, not the booze. I'm not that skilled.
