they updated the head to dual vvt with 'intelligence' aka electronically controlled, in the 3rd gen 2TR-FE. So compression needed to change too.

    Otherwise...2TR-FE = 2TR-FE

You must not get out much. LOL

Probably one of the best car engines they have ever put in a truck, though it may be the only one they have ever put in a truck. But I will admit, if I was into drag racing a truck I would opt for the V6, but that would be if I didnt buy a Chevy, Ford or Ram. The fastest Tacoma I have ever been in, is still a slug.

That’s exactly what I have. Down to test this with someone in Chicagoland. First beers on me after regardless of outcome.

I’ll ask the local pool guys if they’ll race me. ;)

For everyone else's information, the changes may have improved the powerband, but peak power and torque remains 159 hp @ 5200 rpm and 180 lb-ft @ 3800 rpm. The emission level has been improved from ULEV II to ULEV III (which was probably necessary for Toyota to continue selling the 2.7L in the US).

Let me know if you’re ever down in NC I’ll take that beer. I should warn you I have the utility package so deduct the weight of rear seats and you probably weigh 500 lbs more than me. Be afraid, very afraid of the silver beast. :D

Hey I resent the pool boy truck reference and prefer “poverty package”. At least mine is suitable for use as an actual truck for hauling heavy and large loads in the bed. As opposed to your sedan truck with a little open trunk. ;)
Enjoyed the banter, have a good evening!

I suspected emissions was the reason for updating the engine. Still bizarre that upgrading the top end resulted in no change to peak HP or torque.

The 4 cylinder 5speed in the later (post 2004) Rangers was rated at 31.5 mpg hwy (7.5 l/100km in Canada) and I often got that. Even with a small camper, rarely did I get less than 24 mpg. Lots of power with the DOHC 2300cc engine.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
A six speed manual trans is all it needs but it is what it is, I guess

That would be cool. At least there is the 2 low kit that allows you to engage low range but only for the rear wheels.
That's something I'd like to purchase.

My son’s 2022 DCSB 2WD 2.7L will constantly get 24.5 - 26.5 mpg highway. My 2022 DCLB 4WD 3.5L gets 18.5 mpg (at best) traveling the same highway at the same speed.

I got 25 mpg this December and closer to 26.5mpg in the summer if I drive conservatively on a 1400km return route to visit family. This is with a full load (3 people, 200lb + canopy and bed full of camping gear, sometimes a kayak on top, etc.) , from sea level through 5,000' + mountains. 4x4 (only used about 3-5% of the time), E rated snowflake tires (skinny and light). In city driving is closer to 20 mpg, especially in the winter. These trucks are cold blooded and should come stock with a battery warmer and block heater. At speeds above 100km/h, fuel economy drops off a cliff.

Before i put a lift and bigger tires on my 4cylinder access cab I was getting 25-27 mpg on the highway. The 4cylinder does get better mpg than the 6 real world stock for stock.

My dash right now says Im averaging 21mpg and I get around 20 mpg (give or take half a gallon per mile) per tank. When I first got it and was used to driving my Subaru I was getting in the low 19s. Are you constantly going up and down mountains on your daily drive? Most of my drive is a decently busy road going 35-55mph (depending on traffic with lots of stop and going) then the other half highway where I do 80.

The dash readout can be pretty far off at times. I noticed on mine if I drive a week mostly all city, or short trips it'l read about 18 mpg. I then do a long highway trip, and it's still reading about the same...I know for a fact its should be better. Takes a good week of mostly highway driving to get the dash reading back in the 20's. It's the same the other way around to. You really need to do the actual math, and not rely on what the dash always tells you.

I came from a '14 2.7 2nd gen to the V6 3rd gen. I bought the 4 cyl because I was commuting a lot for work. It did everything that I asked it to do. I wish the MPG was a little better but the reliability was great. Traded that truck in with almost 170k on it. Now I don't need to drive as much so I went with the 3.5. It runs a lot better in my opinion. Not sure what I would've done if I was still doing that drive every day though. I feel like the V6 is still pretty reliable compared to other vehicles. Maybe not as reliable as the 2.7 though. So that being said, I fully understand someone still being interested in the 3rd gen 4cyl. But the MPG being almost identical does make the choice a bit harder than it was when the 2nd gen was out.
