Well the Tacoma i drive right now is a 4x2 PreRunner, No TRD.

A Tundra is now in the question since my brother will start driving soon and he will get the tacoma. I know i want TRD, and its just a pain convincing my dad that it is better to get the TRD Off-Road Package vs. Just getting 4x4. Because he thinks there is no need for the TRD package and just 4x4 is enough for "off-roading"

When i was at the houston auto show, i was speaking to one of the reps toyota had, and he told me even though i didnt have the TRD's "A-Trac" the truck still came with TRAC. Which just ended up confusing me...

What benefits does having TRD offer besides different shocks, tires, and A-TRAC? (or better yet, do i really need A-TRAC if the truck already has TRAC in just the 4x4 model?)

I'm with your Dad...I have just a 4x4, no trd and no sr5 packages, without trac or atrac or any other driving assistance and it gets around off road just fine.
I had non-trd shocks and now I have the TRD shocks, the change in ride quality is hardly noticable and the TRD shocks make for a stiffer ride. I changed out the tires at the same time so hard to know which made more difference, I think the tires did.

If you dont know what TRD comes with why do you "need" TRD package?
Who is paying for it? I hope its you :D

Well the trd comes with a pointless outlet in the back. And I don't know about you guys but I am not a fan of one wheel spins.

Cosmetic mods: HID 10k head+3k fog lights, BHLM, T-rex 2 eyelids, billet grill (5 piece), 20% front window tint, 4% back window tint, tinted 3rd brake light, altezza tail lights, LED license plate lights, door skid protectors, slotted drilled rotors, plasti dip rims, painted rotor and drums. Interior mods: TRD seat covers, LED map and dome lights, 2 kicker 10' w/ 500 watt amp, pioneer door speakers, and Pioneer AVIC X930BT.
the only difference is the suspension and some cosmetics. (matching paint, decals, hood scoop, steering wheel controls,or lockers) if youre planning on lifting the truck 4+ inches, youre gonna lose the trd suspension anyway. i took the trd sport because thats all they had at the time and i talked 5k off the sticker price

A tundra for off-road? The trails in TX must be huge. A tundra in the trails here and You would have no paint on the doors. From the sound of it, your dad seems to be the one buying let him pick. Hell ill let you take over my payments on my trd Tacoma and ill take what ever is free. But really the Trd tundras aren't that different from the 4x4.

There is no TRAC in low range... only A-TRAC (or do the 4 Lo Trac mod)... The Off Road TRD has a HYDRAULIC brake booster for the A-TRAC device and that also enhances the TRAC in H4 and AUTO LSD (H2)... The outlet in back is great to power things on the trail... I use mine all the time when camping to fill the air mattress.

Read my link below on Trac/ A-TRAC, etc. to get a full understanding of the '09+ Traction controls... Better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it!
