Can I get a trophy for first legit ECU failure? :D

J - truck is amazeballs now. No stuttering, no loss of power when stepping on throttle, it actually feels like a freaking rocket now!!

Had to re-flash again after a CEL popped up, but it was just the p0420 and p0430 (cat efficiency crap) that I needed to turn off (totally understand why you wouldn’t - smog, I only use my truck off road ;)).

Tor - thanks for all the time and advice.. Learned a LOT from you!

12 - thanks for enlightening me (hopefully I have the right 12 haha) on the path to direct ecu control via hptuners and putting me in touch with J.

Still want trophy for being special enough to be the only one (I’ve seen) to actually have their weird ass issue be the ecu not operating properly!

    LONG FREAKING ROAD…

I mean... i bricked an ECU a few years ago with a bad flash with my HPTuner... then HPTuners used the logs to redo how the ecu got written to and updated the software for everyone so the chances of it happening happened far less.

I remember reading that.. wasn’t it taking over 5 minutes per flash back then?

sorry man, but thanks to that and the collective response from Chris and J, things got wayyyy better.

Also was happy to see the dude from ov tune help un brick it (if remembering properly)

Yup, ECU was actually the underlying gremlin…

    OE PCM or a UCON?

Originally I had UCON.. going with the hptuners was def the better choice for tuning applications to keep more direct control over all engine management parameter !!!IF!!! you know what you’re doing or know someone who does (otherwise bye bye engine)..

With UCON, reported fuel trims were natural seeming. But I knew I had an issue because the engine would surge/de-power under heavy throttle change, or sometimes just a slight change in throttle when moving from a stop (which would be decent load level)

with HP tuners and the bare ECM, with my Siemens injectors (URD kit), the fuel trims were running ‘rich’, even when fuel scaling was reduced. This is when I said screw it, went with FUEL injector clinic’s 650 injector set to KNOW that they were precisely measured. Same deal, ran ‘rich’. Put stock OEM injectors back in, with the stock tune after disconnecting my rotrex, and fuel trims appeared to be functional again..

was literally when we changed fuel scaling parameters via Hp tuner (a VERY common practice) that my very very special and unique ecu decided to enter weird mode and not have LTFTs, while only using one of three different constants as values for the STFTs regardless of what was actually happening.

new ecu, hp tuners tune, 650 injectors and things work as they should. Disregard the 50 other things I did over the past 18 months tracking this crap down, while again extending massive amounts of thanks to those who have helped me here and remotely.

So to be totally fair, I don’t think ucon was my issue, I just think that there was no way to diagnose my issue while I had ucon in place.

that being said, aside from the guardian mode during overheating events, and not needing to know anything about tuning when using the ucon, I do think up tuners with direct ecu access is hands down the better way to go. Love the tune justdsm setup for me.
