3rd Gen Kill Switch Question

Hi all,

I am a new owner of a 2021 Tacoma 4x4 Offroad and I would like to put in a kill switch. I have been researching how to do this but I am having trouble finding info for a 2021 Taco.

Can anyone tell me how to identify which wire to splice into under the driver side door sill? If this is no longer best practice I am interested to know how best to go about it. If there are links to previous threads with this information please let me know.

I’m also interested and have only found responses like: good insurance, parking in garage, guns, push-to-start not easily stolen, etc.

I’d rather not going through the inconvenience of a stolen truck, especially when modded, if a simple preventive action can be taken.

If you have any tips or find anything please let me know.

I'm very interested in this as well. The best way to secure your truck is to have something that is unique to your truck, your own system: a kill switch only you know the location of, an electronic security system that only you know how to disable, or even a mechanical lock only you know how to crack. Sure, it will not prevent a determined thief, but they will need to spend time reverse engineering your system, time that they don't have (security through obscurity).

I can confirm that pulling out the AM2 (No. 1) 30A fuse renders my truck un-startable.

 

@caribe makaira has an awesome solution for this! Kills the fuel pump.

 

Isn't it better to kill the starter, to prevent any unexpected behavior that the vehicle was not designed for?

 

That works too. Can be done with a relay as well

 

i used to have a toggle switch under my front panel that i would just flip off when i got out of the truck but that was back in the 70's, don't think it will be that easy to install now, if i remember, i just went to the ignition, then back to the toggle switch, but i don't think that is an option now on the newer cars, may just buy a club for the steering wheel..

 

I installed a keyless entry system to my SR with keyed ignition. The push button cars might not be the same but it’s worth looking at these diagrams.

I had to tap into the ignition power source for my keyless entry. It’s possible to splice a switch into the ignition power/ground as a kill switch. All of this is in the steering column and is physically impossible to get to unless the car is on, wheel turned so you have access to the 2 screws holding in the lower column panel.

The fuel kill switch doesn’t work as advertised!

 

You don't kill high current items like starter, you kill easy circuits that won't trigger warning lights.

Personally if its smart key, I'd probably just interrupt the stop light switch, the blue wire (which is only hot when the pedal is pushed) sends signal to ECM to allow start. Any dummy would know how to jump it, but it would slow down a terrified thief. Not like they carry around jumper wires with them. It would just be there to make me feel better.

I've been reading on this subject for a bit since I have a 2023 4runner non-premium TRD O/R on order & later on I may replace my '15 Tacoma TRD O/R with a 2023 TRD O/R. Both are only available with push-start ignitions which I don't care for but have no choice in the matter. This is the 1st time I've read about what you suggested & I like it. Seems simple enough. Is this blue wire easily accessible? Has anyone here done this?

If you unplug the fuel wire from under the left rear passenger chassis the vehicle will still start and properly still drive. The truck just continues to idle and then the RPM will drop slowly. Until the engine starts to knock from low fuel. Even if you kill the Same main fuel EFI from inside the engine bay fuse box, the same issue will occur. the truck still drives just really low rpm. I’m convinced the because the truck in direct fuel injected that it’s still drawing fuel because of the high PSI demand.

this was my experience and after that first knock from the engine I was like. Plan B

so I decided the put the kill switch on the brake stop. You can’t start the car without pressing the brake light. So I taped into that and it works great. There is a fuse inside the engine bay and also a plug that attached to the brake inside the cabin. Easy day !

 

I'd say share a pic but its up to you. It's a simple way to make the thieves think the key they copied isn't working. Plus it lets you rest a little bit easier. Glad it worked.

 

Is this the blue wire that @Bishop84 mentioned? I'm not asking for any pics for obvious reasons. I just want to know where to look for the blue wire. Keep in mind that I don't own a 3rd Gen yet but it will be an Off Road model with push button start. Something simple enough for my wife and I to know about but more difficult for thieves.

I think between this & the Key Fob disable, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wmr1VPU8cw (start video at 1:45) they will both greatly reduce the chances of vehicle theft.

Of course they can always take it on a flat bed but if they want it that bad at that point they can keep it.
