$5700 on Upgrades? Worth it?

I’m 22 and I purchased my first Tacoma this month! I’m looking to upgrade tires/wheels/lift. I’ve gotten a quote from a local shop for the following items.

- 3” OME lift kit
- 285/70 R17 Duratrac Tires
- 4Runner TRD Pro Wheels
Quote $5700 (with tax)

I’m wondering if there is better way to go about these upgrades for less money. It seems like a reasonable quote to me for the items.

Is this over priced?

 

What ome kit is it and what does it come with.

One way is to install it yourself. It's not difficult.
Buy takeoff TRD wheels.

You may still be cutting and chopping to fit 285's. Lift alone won't allow to fit them. Tons of threads on 285's rubbing even with lift. Like others mentioned, that's a lot of moolah to be spending. Hope you have cash, if your doing this. Extras like this should never be financed.

 

If you didn’t pay cash for the truck it’s $5700 too much.

 

Find used coilovers, not ome, have them rebuilt, use them.

285’s fit without cutting or chopping. Even without a lift. Many people get the incorrect offset and run into problems. I had 285’s on stock suspension, just had to remove the front mud flaps. I now have a 2 inch lift and still no cutting or chopping. Any wheel with roughly +10 to -10 offset will do the trick. Anything outside of that and you will need to cut or chop.

 

It’s a 2” lift and yes, the quote is overpriced IMO.

Just so you know, this is entry level OME lift kit. I’m running it. You get very little downtravel with this lift kit, front shocks will top out if going a bit too fast over speed bumps/potholes I still like it though, great off-road.

If I could go back in time, I would have got aftermarket UCAs and extended travel shocks. I will eventually do that in few years.

 

Yes, for the millionth time: lift does not help clear larger tires!

 

I'll do it for $5k and I'll load up the rear seats with beer before you go

 

I have the same lift. Paid $1600 for parts and $300 for install.

 

For comparison, I paid 800 for my 4R wheels. Those duratracs are 1200 installed. The OME can be found for 1600. You'll need an alignment, which normally runs about 100-150.

You're paying about 2 grand give-or-take for a suspension install, which is what, 1000 bucks an hour?

Oh, and PS. I personally wouldn't want to shoehorn 285s into a 7 inch bead. I feel like that's asking for trouble.

 

If possible you should install everything yourself. You’ll save $, learn a thing or two, and it will probably mean more to you that way.
