Going to be leaving for SD on Monday. Usually just blast down 90 but considering the weather coming through was considering taking I80.

I-80 through Wyoming is empty and boring. It also has the most closed section of freeway in the country. Elk Mountain by Laramie makes it's own weather. You'll want to check wind, not just precipitation as well. Sometimes it gets closed for high winds.

EDIT: Never mind. I misread and thought you were leaving SD, not going there.

Oh I'm just going to Custer, SD... never taken 80 all the way but seems like what most people bitch about online is WY and west

I would avoid shit-cago like the plague. Quick maps run showed 3 routes. I'd go for the one that routes around it, or rather through the smallest amount of it as possible. Also happens to be the fewest miles. If you can add the time I'd avoid it all together.

You could probably go through Canada to avoid Chicago, without affecting the driving distance.

I always try and get through chicago at night, at the right time, I’ve breezed through. At the wrong time I’ve sat in traffic for hours. Its funny because I usually am deciding between 90 and 94 in terms of going westward. I know it’s not a question for you as your ending in SD.

I always use 80 in the winter. Going to the south only that far will not avoid snow but it will avoid the lake effect snow that can happen along the 90. It is actually faster in my opinion. Hard to avoid Chicago. I just work to time it for more off hours. I have driven straight through from Southern NH to Chicago heading west.

There is a more direct line north of Lake Erie but unless you turn north through Michigan which is much longer, you will end up going through Chicago.

haha yeah I made it. ended up going 90 the whole way and ran into a hell of a storm around sioux falls, highway shut down, semi's off the road everywhere. it was a nightmere, I think I will take 80 like you suggested next time

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Any Interstate Highway in Winter weather sucks .

Give me any US Highway Not Limited Access I can get pulled over or turn around or drive through a field.

The Best Place is parked at a nice restaurant

My Go to around Chicago was always US route 30 but it has been years
