I searched and didn't find much, so maybe we can compile a list of important things in keeping components from rusting during the times when the roads are salted.

I moved up here from Texas, and I don't know jacksh!t about snow stuff.

I would prefer not to rust out my 2013 Dcab just yet. What does everyone do to keep the salt out and rust off?

...manual car wash, car washes that provide a 'bottom blast', that's about it short of rust proofing the vehicle. good luck.

Can you only pretty much do preventative maintenance when it comes to rust. It's something that isn't really able to be avoided. If you wash it regularly. Some people suggest using SeaForm or getting Undercoating. Also if you live in a place that uses a lot of road salt, sand, gravel. You'd want to wash it more than a place that doesn't use salt, sand, gravel on their roads.

Hand wash it with the pressure washer. I don't trust the the automatic wash to get under the truck well. Make sure to get underneath the vehicle well. Up inside the wheel wells, spray up between the rocker panels and frame and basically point the washer everywhere under the truck. I like to get my front cab mounts and crossmembers from the back and front, and I spray alot around the rear axle and hitch.

If you get a warm day or feel ambitious crawl under the truck and see where all the shit collects.

Wash the under side REALLY well and apply ALOT of Fluid Film. That's what I did and it works great. I live in Salt Lake City and we get lots of snow and the roads are constantly being salted and sanded.

I'm in Canada, north of Toronto. Lots and lots of salt on the roads. Every year I get it sprayed with Krown Rust Control (solution or compound?) and over the past 10 years my 3 Rav4's I've owned are pretty minty looking (the dealership mechanics remark this).

Rust Chek is another compound/solution that is sprayed on vehicles here in Ontario. Hope this helps the battle!

    Cheers,
    Barney

See the bolded text above, nothing works better...

And in lieu of moving back to Texas/ southwest fluid film is a good preventative measure. That said, it's going to rust, not much you can do about it unless you can change the laws of chemistry...

Rent your vehicle. That is, consider it a rental/or mortgage payment. You buy a new vehicle, trade it in about 3-4 years after you buy it and get a new one. Keep doing that- it's a vicious cycle. You'll always have a payment, forever, but you will have a solid vehicle all the time.

Another vote for krown. This is my 2015 tacoma. Seem nothing but Toronto snow/salt . Picture of truck taken last week and underside this summer when I was down there greasing u-joints. And last pic is from the passenger side front door seam on my 13 year old Honda Odyssey before I sold it. Oily but 100% rust free after 13 Toronto winters
