So let me get this disclaimer off my chest. I know jack shit about this stuff. Literally nothing. When I was in the Marine Corps, I could find a quarter in the desert before I could ever figure out how to use comms. Besides the obvious of on/off and click to talk.

So I have a couple of XPR 6550 radios by Motorola that I got from a friend of mine that is no longer with us. Issue is, I don't have the slightest clue what to do with them to get them functional for me to use out on the trails and such. The little radios I have work up to a mile or so and they are hit or miss. Would love to get these working. Anyone have an idea who I should see/go to or how to do this on my own? I'm in DFW, TX if that helps.

    Honestly appreciate any help.

They are pretty easy to program, you will need the software from Motorola, and a programming cable. The software is really available online, I will send you a DM.

what is the model number? It will be located underneath the battery.

That's an XPR6550. I'd program them up on some GMRS channels and you'd be good to go.

Tell me you know nothing about radios without telling me you know nothing about radios.

The model number, located beneath the battery, gives us the band info. The XPR6550 came in VHF, UHF 1 and UHF 2 splits.

My dude, based on the picture provided I'm pretty sure the antenna in the photo indicates it's a UHF radio, and both UHF bandsplits cover the GMRS frequencies I referenced. And if I am wrong and it's a VHF portable, then he can program up MURS frequencies (which would be better for him anyway as GMRS requires a license technically speaking). So, my bad for trying to be helpful.

The antenna on a random radio is not always indicative of what's in the radio. The fcc info generally is.

Folks don't swap rf boards as frequently as they break or loose an antenna and find one that fits or matches what other similar portables look like. It's a hand me down radio I want him to know what he's got and paint a realistic picture of what's it capable of.

Sweet, it's UHF so it'll handle FRS and GMRS channels, some ham stuff; you'll be able to hear Haslet fire dispatch and a bunch of local towns fire and police channels.

it'll hold a thousand channels so you'll be hard pressed to run out of people to talk to.

Sweet! Love to hear good news. Bad news is, I check online and it's like 120 for the cable but can't seem to find the software. I'm still trying to find a shop locally but so far it's only retail, no repair.

Edit: Woah am I that high, the original text is in some Shakespearean dialogue but the quote is normal. WTF?!?

I'm high as fuck and I thought, "wow great stuff." Then seeing the quote too and your response, like this stuff isn't all that great .

Seriously, this is straight up weird.

There are some radio shops that are cool and will help you out, and some that are overly contract and profit driven.

having your own programming set up, and somebody to help you out is the best route to take. those radios are somewhat old, and you may need a new battery for it.

I just set them on the chargers last night. Will be pulling them off when I get home to see how long they charge for. Thanks for the tips.
