Hey all, sometimes when I engage 4H on my 2017, it won’t engage until I stop and put it in reverse. It will then engage. I have noticed that if I am using 4H a lot, when I engage it it will engage regularly Without having to put it in reverse. Anyone know the cause of this or have experienced anything similar?

My only thought is to ah engage 4h once or twice a month year round to keep everything moving.

Run 4H at least monthly to prevent seizure of actuator.

4H engages way quicker and easier while moving. I usually do it while taking foot off gas around 20/25mph

I tried engaging the 4H after taking my foot off the gas and it reacted suddenly as opposed to when I'm traveling 45mph and increasing speed then engaging 4H.

The transition was less noticeable than when I took my foot off the gas and engaged.

    Just an observation.

I also tried to engage 4H when I was traveling 60mph.

The system kept beeping at me so I returned the dial back to 2H. (It did not engage)

The manual says to engage under 50 mph which definitely is the reason my Sport would not engage.

This is what I do... try to engage often.

I will try that. I usually do it while moving but with my foot on the gas.

this is more than likely your problem, if you lift off the throttle for a split second (as mentioned above) the load is removed from the driveline. Also on that same note; you do not want a load from engine braking either,,, there is essentially neutral point. It's hard to describe, but easy for folks who grew up driving manuals to have that feel.

Have you changed the transfer case fluid? I did mine at 50K miles. Switches between 2H and 4H quicker and smoother. I used a can of the expensive Toyota fluid. This is about as cheap as I have seen it.

I do it a little different, moving anywhere from 10-50 mph but lift my foot slightly off the gas when I roll the knob to 4H then press the gas when it quits flashing so I know it engaged.

Yep...take foot off gas briefly then engage. Also, do the same when disengaging back from 4H to 2WD... won't get the clunk noise.

Not sure why it is expensive. I try to stick with OEM when possible. Only needed one can and figured I would change it again in another 50K miles.

I just received an order from them and they sent LT diff oil instead of LF, Darrell at Lithia has zero customer service. Doing mine at 21k miles, over 1/3 of that has been towing a 5klb travel trailer...

I've found engaging the 4wd on my tacoma to be the slickest truck ever had. Doesn't matter stopped or moving on the gas or not. Just turn the knob, and the green led on the dash instantly appears. It's so quiet, and clunk free, completely unlike the tundra I had.

Most hate full thing Toyota ever did! The axles spin all the time anyway on the newer ones any way. On my older stuff I just left the hubs locked all winter and used the stick on the floor worked every time no lights it just worked.
