    Hi All,

Thanks for being here all these years! First post for me.

My new-to-me 2013 4.0 MT has RPMs that “hang” (which I know is normal), but they also rise and fall a couple hundred RPMs as they drop down when I depress the clutch from being in gear and moving. This fluctuation happens a couple times before settling at idle.

Once it does reach idle at around 700 it does not move and is unaffected by clutch movement.

I'm inclined to clean throttle body and MAF and change the spark plugs.

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks.

It's normal for the RPMs to fluctuate coasting with the clutch in or trans in neutral, mine has done it since new.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
New plugs would be a good start

My ‘06 did the same. Would not drop to a dead idle when coasting at any real speed.

My truck always hangs a little above idle when i hold the clutch in while rolling.

It doesn't rev up and down, just sits above idle.

Alright. Well, thanks. Always “nice” to hear it’s not just me and can happen from the get go. What’s the range of fluctuations it goes through on yours?

Cleaned throttle body and MAF and that seems to have helped. They were quite dirty. Will see if it relearns and settled down.

    Changing plugs today.

Would it move up AND down in its way to some place that it stayed?

    Thanks.

My ‘13 does this same thing since the day I drove it new off the lot. Pop it out of gear and coast makes the engine RPMs bounce.

Roger that. Maybe it’s a case of ME needing to re-learn. And just focus on the road, eh? I know myself and I’ll have to poke around a bit more and go through a lot of stuff myself, anyway lol.

Best I can recall, yes, I think it would dance a bit then settle at 1100 to 1200 rpm, but continue to drop to 700 if you coasted to a stop when the engine engine was warm.

I have to admit this is a distant memory, I haven’t had the Tacoma for 6.5 years and didn’t spend a whole lot of time trying to coast in neutral when I did have it.

    Ok, thanks!

Yeah, in my “normal” driving it really only happens in 3rd gear, from 30 mph and down, when approaching a light or stop sign.
