2003 4Runner Limited 4wd V8 FJ tcased overlanding rockcrawling do-it-all build

Haven't done the headers yet. Money and time have been tight lately but I'm hoping to do them soon. @MI-FLoffroader installed his headers a couple year ago and has a small writeup on doing them in his build thread. Check his sig for that. He's not running cats either and was able to get the CEL to go ff, look like by using some extensions for the O2 sensors.

The intake tube is for a bit of extra sound and also to clean up the underhood a little. I still have the stock intake, so if I encounter any issues, I can swap back to it. I've seen comments on the resonator chambers supposedly helping with torque due to the resonance or eliminating pulses or something in the air flow but I'm not sure I buy that. I don't think the effect is noticeable enough to make a difference from the driving I've done with the smooth intake.

 

Had DT headers, URD y-pipe (cat delete) on my GX, not sure how different it is vs a 4th gen T4R. I had a shop install them for me since I didn't want to deal with it. Purchased them from URD and they offered an O2 simulator. No CEL's or pending codes since install almost a year ago. Not sure if they still offer it or not though.

 

Also, when purchasing, I started to look into tuning options. I believe that OVtune had some offerings that could trick the ECU into not throwing codes for a cat delete. May want to hit them up and see if this is still the case.

 

The .gov has clamped down on o2 signal modifications, so finding one might prove difficult. URD sold their version called an "o2 sensor calibrator" but they had to stop selling them I believe.
The "mini cats" as people call them are nothing more than a right angle fitting for your o2 sensor.
They have a small amount of metal material in them that tricks the sensor.
They have been getting harder to find also.

 

Yeah, URD no longer has the o2 calibrators available. Haven't check for the right angle fittings tho. I was just looking at the DT Y-pipe and thinking of cutting the resonators out (interesting that the y-pipe that @Gen1FTMFW had didn't come with the resonators) and replacing them with cats, and moving the O2 sensor to after those.

OV Tune won't work on my 2003 non-VVTi 2UZ, to my knowledge. Most recent thing I found on it was that they are now supporting 2005+ VVTi 2UZ motors. I'd love to go that route tho, if it ever became available.

 

Installed the new intake pipe. Wrinkle paint came out shitty but it's black and I don't care that much.

 

I got the URD y-pipe. Wish I had seen that the DT version comes with resonators. Email OV and see if they have anything. I reached out and they didn't support mine at the time but said they were working on it. If they know there is interest, they might work on something...

 

Also, if it is something that you're serious about, I could get the OVTune and sell you my O2 simulator/calibrator.

 

I was gonna go that route also, but haven't done it. No inspection here in Florida.
The cat substitution for the res in the Y pipe would OK for an OBD system inspection, but a real jerk on a visual could cause a problem in CA, MA, MD, and a few others. Even if the emissions are within proper limits, it's still altered from stock.
My personal opinion is that the diesel Brothers law suit in their state created a lot of this attention on other signal modifiers and the subsequent bans.
There is also a bill circulating that would make it illegal to modify any street vehicle for racing.

URD still has the universal MAF sensor calibrator for our trucks that you solder into the main harness, then you can pair it with a laptop and do some changes based on fuel trims and air volume.

Might be a possibility in the future.

No inspection in AZ, just a ODB scan to verify that there are no CELs registered. I'm not a fan of the EPA in general and some of the BS that they have come up with regarding vehicular emissions. CA is a whole other story, let's not bother going there.

I'll have to look into the MAF calibrator.

 

The URD y-pipe is pretty pointless and only results in rasp. Unless you have a turbo or supercharger maybe. No, URD no longer sells any goodies. Been scared into submission. I don’t know what they’re good for anymore, all that’s left from them can be had else’s for less.

 

Wish I would've gone a different route for sure. End result is pretty raspy.

 

I don't know about being scared into submission, heavy fines incurred to sell a product doesn't make good business sense.
My 5th gen URD Y pipe works well. I guess the V8 Y is not so good. Considering how unbelievably restrictive the oem Y is, I would take the rasp.
The Thorely Y I bought for my V8 didn't match up to the headers, so it had to be cut and clocked to the proper angle. Sounds good, but I can't recommend it because of the misalignment.
Keith Carty/Dirty Deeds sells Tundra exhaust for the 2UZ, he might have an idea of what works for a Y. All of these companies might be getting pressure from the gov though.

 

Replaced the driver side O2 sensor this morning and so far, no new codes or pending codes.

Lol. Ok, yeah, I guess. The O2 didn't fail until last week tho, so not really neglected. It got driven the whole time.

 

Still waiting for this to happen @Empty_Lord. Quit neglecting the Tundra. Have you even repainted the driver door yet???

 

I run these as well, use a hose clamp and cut them so the cover the shaft at ride height. Been running them like that for 6 or 7 years and have yet to replace the shaft after some serious pitting on my initial trip without any boots.

I'd be wary of those, if you bend them into the path of the body, something is going to explode, hopefully it will be the guard and not the shock or shock mounts.
