Separate clutch fluid reservoir?

My manual transmission 2021 TRD Sport has a combined reservoir for the brake fluid and clutch fluid. The Off-Road model uses separate reservoirs for each. I was able to find an OEM clutch fluid reservoir, bracket, and hose inexpensively. There must be some advantage for separate reservoirs. Should I install this and feed the clutch master cylinder from the separate bottle? (I would cap off the clutch outlet on the combined reservoir.)

TRD sport has totally different braking system than the Off Road. There is no advantage as far as clutch. Why would you think there is an advantage? Because it's different?

 

OR uses electric brake booster vs vacuum.

 

OPs truck is a TRD trim as well. So TRD OR is not a higher trim.

 

Isn't the fluid separated in the reservoir anyway? I seem to remember 2nd gens had a single reservoir but there was a barrier in the middle...

You are not wrong there. OR is a “better value” trim cuz you get locker/CC/atrac vs scoop.

But OR is not a “higher” trim than sport, both are TRDs.

 

I don't know man, this sorta kinda feels like a solution looking for a problem. But then again, what the hell do I know!

I don't disagree there. 4x4 versions of both are separated by approximately 100 dollars. I don't really "get" the purpose of the sport, but it's not my money, so limited slip away.

 

I wanted OR originally, but no DCSB OR with 6MT offered up here… Had to get a sport, no regrets. Love the scoop.

By the way it’s not limited slip. Auto”LSD” is only 2WD mode. Traction control in 4LOW works amazing. Surprised me many times. 100 times better than open diffs.

 

Zero advantage. It is likely that the ORs just have that one brake reservoir from other models and they didn't want to make another mold with a clutch outlet.

But you called TRD OR a “higher” trim than TRD sport, which is not the case. Both cost pretty much the same and come with a lot of same features.

There's a dam in the combination reservoir, but it doesn't come into play unless the fluid level gets low. When you fill the tank with brake fluid, it covers both sides. It seems to me that separate reservoirs would eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination.

My proposed change wouldn't affect the brake side at all. The clutch side is almost like an afterthought -- it's just one hose that goes over to the firewall and connects to the clutch master cylinder.

I priced this out, getting new parts from a dealership. It would cost about $170. Ouch. I managed to get the unit for a fraction of that. (These same parts were used in the Land Cruiser.) I'll try to post pictures if and when I do this project.
