Hi, I finally joined Taco World after reading a lot of posts over the years as a guest. Thanks for all the informative posts. I'm driving a 2000 Tacoma manual 3.4L V6 TRD 4x4 with 394K. Only 22k isn't mine, I'm the 2nd owner. It still drives and looks great! No oil consumption, etc. Shifter is getting a little sticky. I'll be looking into that.

I'm looking at 400K servicing coming up. I've replaced the timing belt 3 times, the last at 304K. So that's due, along with the usual that comes with that (water pump, maybe radiator, etc.). I might consider front and rear differential oils, etc.

I had a recent P0420 code (catalyst system efficiency below threshold). I cleared it and it comes back after about 1000-1500 miles. So it's intermittent but came back. The CATs are new at 225K and are aftermarket. I recently tightened down the valve cover nuts after noticing them a little loose with a little oil seepage. Cleaned that all up and within 50 miles, the P0420 went away on it's own. Maybe that's related somehow to me cleaning up the manifold and valve cover?

Any other suggestions for 400K? Most recent other work was new Mass Air, fuel filter, temp gauge, some vac hoses, 2 inner tie rods, O2 sensor, between 375K and now. Of course I keep up on brake pads, oil, filter and other normal stuff. I should say I'm not a mechanic, but like to take care of my truck. This one replaced a 1983 22R engine 5-speed with 400K. (The body rusted out but it still drove fine).

Needless to say, I'm a Toy fan...

Thanks, I was being hopeful, I guess. I'll probably put them in at some point, before the next emissions test and license renewal. With the timing belt and other 400K work, the cats will add a pretty penny. Any opinions on OEM vs aftermarket? The OEM are wicked expensive.

i always go oem man. quality parts that have always proven themselves. i dont mind paying for quality. yo0ur truck might not like aftermarket parts and be part of the problem. just my opinion though.

Yup, I agree for the most part. I've had to replace aftermarket stuff earlier than I would have thought they should last. I'll price the OEM cats and see if I can swing it. But at nearly 400K, I'm wary of putting too much $ in...I got 170K out of the last ones. If the new cats go to 575K, I'll be smiling!
