2012 Tacoma v6 air filter

I would like to replace my engine air filter.
I got the used 2012 Taco V 6 from a Toyota deal ship back in October.
The filter is very dirty and I live in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

It has been a very mild winter, this confuses the pollen generating plants.
What is a good air filter.

I do not need increased power and I do want better gas mileage, 15-18 mpg.
A brief history.
My first Taco was a 2002 standard cab , manual, with only 198K miles. It was totaled, not my fault, back in October.
So I have a lead foot and love to shift. not now.
This 2012 is a big step up for me.
also the truck is BLACK at night and YELLOW during the day, POLLEN.
Any ideas.
Should like wax the truck, will that keep pollen off or get a monthly fee truck wash?

Based on my past experiences with oiled filters, I only run dry filters now in all my rigs. The oil tends to leave a residue on the MAF and allows dirt to stick to it.

 

Just get a generic dry filter on Amazon for $10 and call it good

 

Denso 1433009, just buy a few to offset the shipping. $12 at RockAuto

 

I’ve been using Wix for few years now.
I add them to my RockAuto order. I usually buy 2 at a time.

 

I am a fan of K&N filters. I've run them for 30 years, and know others that have as well. Never had an engine issue from the air filter.

Nice thing is, you can clean them as often as you like (such as after a wheelin' trip), and the cost is virtually nothing.

That said, I have a K&N filter for the stock air box for sale. I changed air boxes (with another K&N), and have no need for the stock one.

OEM/Denso/Wix. That's it. You'll get no benefit from an expensive K&N or anything else except a lighter wallet. Stock Tacomas aren't bottle-necked by anything related to air flow, anyone telling you they are is selling snake oil. Use the search function if you don't believe me.

 

Agree, except for the cost.

Long term, K&N filters cost less than disposables.

Don't do the K&N. The long term "cost" savings is quickly offset by one failed MAF or even the time to clean it.

Just get the standard paper filter and move on with life.

 

Anyone have a IRL example of the K&N MAF sensor problem? I don’t think the small amount of oil used to condition the filter would ever cause a problem. On the other hand if you emptied an entire bottle on to it, you may have an issue. That bottle is supposed to last the life of the filter.

They don’t filter as good as paper. The point of the filter is to filter.

The paper OEM ones don’t need changing too often. Even with lots of dirt roads they last a while. Must be due to where the Tacoma draws air from.

 

Another option for 4.0 usually stocked at the stores:
Air - Super Tech 3315 $13 at Walmart
Cabin - Super Tech 7250 $11 at Walmart

 

The last Super Tech 3315's I bought at Walmart were repackaged Denso filters made in USA. Great deal.

 

I ran a k&n on my 3.4 swapped s/c 3rd gen pickup, I was constantly having to pull the maf and clean it. Switched back to a factory air box/filter never had another problem.

 

Pull your throttle body and feel the oily dirty buildup on the inside of the throttle tube. Pull your MAF and see the buildup all over the unit. All this takes is a screwdriver.

 

Agree with the above regarding K&N. I ran one in my 2006 Dodge Charge for a long time. Made more of a mess than it was worth IMHO.

Ran good ol Fram filters with the big pleats in my truck for a long time. Can be had for reasonable price at Walmart. Switched over to the washable AFE dry a year or two back. Nice because its a dry filter (no oil), but you can wash it under the sink when it gets dirty.

I used to run a K&N on a Pathfinder and had MAF problems. It's not a myth nor a good "filter" for the non race vehicle.

 

as others have said, dry paper filters are fine. as far as the pollen, and GOOD (i mean REALLY good) wax job, then the pollen rinses right off...still have to clean the windows as they water spot, but its the price you pay! or just drive really REALLY fast and itll all blow off...
