The nurse gig sounds like a winner. How does your wife feel about it? Allowing the kids to have experiences with other adults is good. Those pesky kids learn different things from different people. Plus the years she spends in the work environment does allow her to progress up the pay ladder. With more years in she should get more pay so the earlier she starts the more she will earn typically. Local Christian schools are often small and nurturing so she would also probably still have contact with them as the grow and spread their wings.

If it's anything like my dad, it's cuz he just needs something to do, a task to work towards. My dad could have retired outright 10 years ago, but after like 3 weeks at home full time, he couldn't stand it any longer and got himself a new job.

Or like the above, is using work as an escape from something bigger.

Yeah, I figure it's none of my business why he still works. My guess is like mentioned, he just needs something to do. He really is the best of our supervision in that he is very meticulous, has good knowledge of all our processes, always aware of upcoming work etc. My guess is he will retire within the next 2 years. He the type of guy who still owns his 1969 Camaro he bought in High-school. Couple of motorcycles and couple newer work vehicles.

You need to retire to something not from something.

Some guys devote their entire life to work - just about every waking hour and thought, their home life consists of household chores and watching TV.
When they retire they suddenly discover that they haven't cultivated any interests to fill up their time.

Faced with seemingly endless hours to fill they either get another job or die with a TV remote in their hand.

I heard of folks die on their final last weeks in military. One guy died on park bench outside his house two weeks to his retirement date from military. Still only gave the wife 30 days to get out of base housing...

I completely agree, and have seen it happen. I don’t know if truer words have been spoken on this thread. Work should not be one’s life, nor should it be one’s retirement.

    So true Rusty.

I’ve watched several of my coworkers die within months of retiring because they didn’t have anything to do after the job. When I retired I knew it was time for me to go but I’ve got a long laundry list of honey-do's and stuff I want to do to keep me occupied for a good long time. I intend on getting all my money out of the pension.

Yes indeed I was one of those people I loved my job. Being home was really not much different then working .

Just doing my projects instead of other peoples. About my only major expense would be shielding gas and electric and taxes.

I had my retiring all planned just never figured on that last fall at home. 30 days Later no Job no Insurance.

That is pretty damn cold...
I understand that "rules are rules" however it seems compassion could fit in there somewhere too.

Not in the military. At least not in the formal military. Support exists but outside the command structure. The families of servicemen will take care of their own often but the formal structure has no room for deviance from rules and regulations. When the goal is to kill the enemy you cannot have individuals questioning orders or thinking for themselves. Everyone has to know what everyone else is going to do. That trickles down into all rules and regulations. It is harsh, and cold but what everyone signs up for. The family knows what happens in advance and it then becomes the responsibility of the soldier to properly prepare their family for what will happen should they die.

It gets really bad when your spouse is deployed overseas when KIA .

The rest of your family if any is far away in no position to help in most cases.

I retired FROM being a Master Tech of two car lines. I didn’t care about retiring to something.
I was burnt out to my core. I took 6 months off and said FU to everyone and everything. Almost like reclusive. I slowly ramped back up and unfortunately I’m busier now per se than before. Not my choice.
It’s amazing how retirement makes you a target for favors from family and others.
I need my free time for all the hobbies I have…
    My advise
Plan to move when you retire. To a different town, state, country.
Being left alone to to what you want to do is a pipe dream..

    ROFLMAO…

I might add, on the other hand, compassion apply to the wrong place at the wrong time could undermine its whole intention. I see that happen to a lots of political leaders' decision.
