Thanks for the tip on the Husky 6x6 containers!

I picked up 3 of them. It looks like 4 could fit if placed on end but not if I use the JKCOVER organizer. Then only 2 can fit stacked.

That's a nice set up, but I don't need to make a career out of modifying my console.

I did, so you don't have to :). Basically, If I can't find something I want, I make it. And in the case of 3D printed Taco parts, I sell them on TacomaWorld and Etsy. This takes about a half hour to assemble and install.

I considered using that space for a switch panel like I did on my 06 Taco. That would just require a piece of ABS plastic - nothing 3D printed. Just make a template out of cardboard and have TAP Plastics cut the ABS. Were you thinking to make a switch panel or were you thinking like a door with a hinge?

FYI: Four can fit tightly. To access the ones on the ends you have to pull out a middle one first.

    UPDATE:
With the Husky box handles faced up they fit with a space above that is not large enough for the JKCover organizer that I just bought.

When placed on end they are even taller but leave a space on one side which could be used for a USB cable that had an L shape to the plug (maybe).

    ??

My inclination at this point is to not use the JKCover organizer. If you want access anything under it, you have to take it out and put it somewhere (your partners lap?).

This is not where I put my cell phone and it just invites more loose stuff...

So I think in the end I'm going from this:

    to this:
    upload_2023-3-14_22-24-50.jpg

With my new storage tray for a few items on top:

So it feels like a modest upgrade. Which was my design goal on this build (which is my second Tacoma): Everything should be done better than on my last build...

I don't want to start another glove box organizer thread so I'm just going to add this note here. I purchased JKCover glove box organizer and quickly discovered that I can't put the factory manuals on the bottom shelf. And if I put them on the top shelf, there's no place to put the box of Kleenex™.

    So back to TAP Plastics...
    upload_2023-3-10_23-0-17.jpg

They made this for the same price as the JKCover out of a slightly thicker ABS plastic sheet.

So the Kleenex™ gets the top shelf and the books get the bottom shelf.

Also, you won't find my registration or insurance documents in my glove box because of this.

My other project today was relocating the pen mount.

    upload_2023-3-10_20-19-57.jpg

Here I've cut it out from the back side to avoid scratches on the front:
    upload_2023-3-10_20-21-28.jpg

and I designed a plate to fill the hole I made:
    upload_2023-3-10_20-22-44.jpg

I also made two pen clips. One for a Sharpie and the other for a standard ball point pen:
    upload_2023-3-10_20-26-7.jpg

I added those to the bottom ABS plastic sheet:
    upload_2023-3-10_20-26-48.jpg

    upload_2023-3-10_20-27-10.jpg

Here the cover is installed. I thought about how a light could go here. Some other time...
    upload_2023-3-10_20-30-57.jpg

I checked the fit with the JKCover tray (even though I'm not going to use it).
    upload_2023-3-10_20-34-0.jpg

I'm also developing a divider but I'm not sure it is worth the trouble.

Adding those pen mounts got me thinking about how to mount a few other items to the bottom of the tray. Things like a lighter, leveling dot, corkscrew, contact lenses container, a comb, toothpicks.

I used to have a Grid-it under my console lid, but weight and space considerations eliminated that option. Velcro could work (sort of). But that means attaching Velcro to items that get handled & I've found they become sticky and dirty after repeated use.

So then I thought about adding a couple of rails to the bottom of the storage tray like this:
    upload_2023-3-14_21-17-9.jpg

Then I can make clips that fit on the rails to hold anything I want. Like this cigarette lighter mount:
    upload_2023-3-14_21-21-56.jpg

So I've started making a set of mounts for stuff that would otherwise be bouncing around in a tray somewhere.

    upload_2023-3-14_21-23-51.jpg

I also started thinking about adding a light for the cubby. I have left over LED strip lights from my ARE truck cap lighting project. So I ordered:
    A23 12V Alkaline Batteries
    A23 Battery holders
    and some
    tilt sensor switches

I think the battery can fit in the console cover and LED strip light right below the hinge for my storage tray.

This has served my purpose perfectly now for 4.5 years. Below is the first day I received it, now it carries stuff I use everyday. Don't remember what it cost but wasn't very much. I store larger items underneath the tray.

So far I made clips for a ballpoint pen, a Sharpie™, a comb, toothpicks, and a lighter. I'm looking for ideas for what else to use this location for.
