Changed my T-case oil, and glad I did

I brief right turn:
Growing up in NE Ohio in the 60's and 70's (yes I'm old) we called all winter boots Sorels because that's all the hunters and ice fishermen bought and wore. Maybe an occasional L.L. Bean Maine hunting boot but for warmth it was Sorels.
These MHBs are probably 40+ yo. I still wear them in muck. Point well made on planned obsolescence.
Now back to Tacoma stuff.

 

I did both diffs and t-case at 5k. Will do it again at 30k. She has 7940 on her now.

 

Having Toyota 4wd pickups since the late 70's, I've found 30k miles to about perfect to do differential, and transfer case fluid changes. Any sooner you're just wasting money.

 

I’ve been driving equally as long and find a similar 30,000 miles or so interval is good before changing my tires. Anything sooner than that is just wasting money.

 

Just to be clear for a newbie
Front and rear Diffs for 4x4 and only rear Diff for 4x2?
transfer case for either or just 4x4?
transmission for BOTH

 

I'm pretty sure 2WD vehicles don't have a transfer case. Unless I'm not understanding what you are asking.

 

I am all for self-maintenance. Should have been for years but now that I can slide under the vehicle it is easier. Also people are apparently changing oil at 5K intervals instead of 10K, which I can financially execute (a $45K truck and I cannot afford and oil change ... only a fool would take that stance!) even with the Valvo Drain Plug and Motivx Oil Filter Wrench and tube.

Toyota says I have about 10 more months of "free basic maintenance" (bought it used, and 3 times within 25k miles still in effect). So is there enough "mouth breathers" reason to take it out of Toyota hands and self-manage, or take the freebies for now?

 

I think as long as you've got a good dealer, take the freebies.

 

Do you use mobile1 in differentials and t- cases?

 

Just to be clear on terms, are you calling the lubricant break in oil because it is what the vehicle came with and was there during your self determined 'break in' period?

Or some other reason?

Asking because I'm unaware of any modern vehicle coming with any type of specific break in fluid that needs to be changed before any manuf specified fluid change interval.

 

I used to. You are supposed to use a different fluid for T case. I now recommend using a proper T case fluid.

75w-90 is fine for stock front and rear diffs. I like Mobil 1, amsoil, redline or valvoline.

 

I’m calling the factory fill oil break in oil because its what the ring and pinion and t-case gears are using to literally break in (aka initially mate their surfaces together properly for optimal service life). I do not have any “self-determined break in period” as you say, I just chose to drain that initial oil which had a lot of metal particles in it from the gears meshing, and I knowing what I saw, I would have done it even earlier than 20K.

 

Looks like the factory T case oil from Toyota is on sale. Do I need to buy one liter of it or two…… 1 liter = 1.05 quarts and its 1.1 quarts to fill completely. Is it truly necessary to fill up with 1.1. That’s assuming I can completely drain 1.1 out, or fill it with one entire can of the toyota oem, and call it a day. Any opinions are recommended!

 

I'm not familiar with the Toyota OEM fluid size. Do they sell by the quart or liter? If by the liter, I think you should be okay with one. However, if you're a klutz like me, I always buy extra, cuz somewhere down the line I'll mess up.

BTW, what's the sale price? I know that oil is beaucoup expensive!

When I changed my transfer case fluid, I used one can of the OEM fluid. If you don’t spill any one can should be enough. The link below is about as cheap as I have seen it.

Not sure about legit, but that’s about as cheap as I have seen. I actually bought mine on Amazon before I price shopped.

I’m going to take an unconventional approach to this. Just buy one liter or one quart. If you come up short on the fill just put a small amount of the drained oil back in. Some purists will object to this approach, but you never get everything out in a drain anyway. I also did not go for the factory LF 75 oil, I went with the Redline.
