Just bought a 2011. Maintenance suggestions?

I had a new Tacoma on order for six months and they would not build it so I just canceled a month ago and I’m going to wait for the next generation. I’ll probably get a 2024 Taco but in the meantime, I found this 2011 2 towns over from a private seller‘s it’s a one owner truck with 111,000 miles. He got a new frame two years ago. I paid 8k. I’m going through the records and trying to figure out what maintenance needs to be done. I think I’m going to put plugs in it and maybe change the fluid in the tranny and the rear differential fluid , any suggestions on what to use or other maintenance suggestions would be great. This is my first taco. I’ve been driving rangers for the last 20 years. TIA

 

If you think you will trade it in for a 4th gen, I would not do too much. Plugs and air filter should be good for now. You should be able to get 8k on a trade that has a new frame.

 

Agreed. Change the fluids and you should be fine.

So just went through the records. The new frame was installed 1/15/2021 @94K. it had new brake lines installed. So I figure the brake fluid, coolant and power steering fluid were replaced at that time. I looked through the manual and it suggests Denso Iridium's plugs, 2.7 quarts of 75-90 gear oil for the tranny and 3.6 quarts of LT 75-85 GL-5 gear oil for the rear diff? The guy kept track of maintenance in his tacoma book they gave him. he changed the oil and filter every4-5k miles. last air and cabin filter were Jan 2022 @102k, so I'll change both of them. Pretty good chance I will just keep the truck forever as a 3rd vehicle. I am in Massachusetts so the roads and salt are tough on vehicles. thanks for the advice.

 

If the plan is to keep get good rust coating on that frame. Fluid film/cosmoline/woolwax type of thing. Surprised to see so much rust on the leaf springs and shackles already since new ones should be part of the frame replacement.

 

I will definitely get some rust coating on it.( there a guy on here from Massachusetts that did it last fall I will see if he does it again this year). I have not figured out yet if the springs are new. I see 2 new lower control arms on the invoice. I know he had new struts, shocks and front brakes installed that he paid extra for.

 

I just took a closer look at the pictures and it does appear that the shackles and probably the springs are original. I have no idea what they were supposed to replace when they did the frame swap.

 

so I did all the maintenance
-cabin filter

-air filter I bought the Denso from rockauto and i got it in but it was a little tight. too thick. will buy a different one next time
-new sparkplugs. Denso long life. the exact same ones that were in there from the factory. the plugs were in pretty good shape for 110k but truck does run a little smother

-oilchange

-drain and fill tranny with Redline MT-90 3 quarts. the drain plug had no magnet so it was at some point replace with a new fill plug. the fill plug had no magnet either. so the fluid was changed at some point maybe when they did the frame. seems to shift a little smoother

-drain and fill rear diff with Redline 75-85 took 1 gallon. there was a 3/8' strip of metal attached to the magnet with a small amount of metal powder too.

-new PCV valve
