It's got a bit annoying having to put my rods in the cab when I run to the lake, so I started thinking about possible solutions. I ordered a set of t-nuts and some rod holders from Amazon, but couldn't quite figure out how to mount the rod holders to the t-nuts.

Then, inspiration hit me and I ran to the nearest dollar store to find the cheapest plastic cutting board available, and voila. I give you my janky redneck fishing rod holder solution that fits under the bed cover when not in use.

I still need to tweak it a bit, though. Right now, the rods stand straight up, but I think that causes them to stick up to high, so I'm going to try remounting them at an angle. I also drilled the mounting holes a bit crooked, so the cutting board isn't entirely straight. No biggie on either, though, as the cutting boards are only $2.50 a piece, so I won't go broke experimenting.

Just don't try to swing through the drive-thru on the way there or back! Nice solution though! I've gotta say though, if you do intend to carry them in cab or bundled together in a rod box of a boat, put some rod socks on them; you'll thank yourself later for not having to untangle them all from each other. I still prefer in cab vs truck bed just for protection/theft, but this only works up to certain lengths of course. If I were to build off of your idea, I'd mount an angled version on the cab rail in the bed, and have them overhanging the tailgate so nothing sticks above the cab. The last mod would be a cheap bungie to keep them all planted!

figuring out decent ways to store and transport fishing rods is never easy no matter what.

Get one of them Flameau pazokaa tube Pro and mount it to the bed track. Those things are nice and teloscopic too.

Storing and transporting rods is easy; get a boat. Maintaining the rod transportation is the tough part.

Decent idea but rods sticking straight up like that would make me very nervous, even if only traveling a short distance. I mostly fish bamboo fly rods that are worth a mortgage payment or two, so I break them down if we are getting in the truck.

Yeah, I definitely considered ways to do it like that. The bed cover complicates things a bit, though. I'm definitely going to keep thinking about it and it's easily changed.

I thought about the bed set up for a while but ended up just mounting on a cargo basket.

Yeah, my rods aren't cheap, either, so I definitely think I'm going to remount the holders to tilt them so the overall height is lowered. I'm already eyeing every overhanging tree branch I see.

$50 worth of plumbing supplies and a couple of U-bolts. I recommend using rod socks to prevent any scratches but it seems to work well for me.

Ooooh, I like that solution and I have the racks for it. It's not the most critical thing in the world, but how's the wind noise with that mounted up there?

Ski racks work great for holding your rods. I have 9 rods here ranging from 5f6i to 8f6i.

Wind noise is pretty minimal. Haven’t done a lot of highway driving with it though.

In many states, it is illegal to hunt from the back of your truck. And many sportsmen consider it unsportsmanlike. I feel those rules should apply to troll fishing too. Get a boat.
