Replace boot for Slip Yoke, Drive Shaft

Anyone had to replace the boot for the slip yoke? I have a 2012 DCSB Off-Road, and the stealership says this part is part of the driveshaft, so $1,500 after tax.

Its a Spicer part, curious if anyone has the PN or has done the replacement with an aftermarket part. Any feedback on install (just drop the carrier bearing?) and grease used much appreciated.

The heat shield on the gas tank was the culprit in cutting mine, probably bending from some puddles. Would recommend everyone to cut that thing shorter so this doesn't happen to you.

If you know what the sizes are, you can x-ref the Dana/Spicer catalog and order one from your local parts house or from online...like so:

Honestly I just Googled "Tacoma slip yoke boot" and that was the 2nd hit (the first was a thread here on TW talking about greasing the slip yoke). No clue if that's the correct one or not - tis just an example.


Alternatively; go to your local shop that specializes in driveshafts and/or differentials. They'll be able to get you a proper sized boot.

I went that same route in the past, looked at the toyota parts spec sheet and ordered from that site and the boot i ordered didn't seem to fit. Measuring thickness of each might be a better way to search if nobody has a PN and a success story. Hoping this is something I can do myself vs a DL shop, if raising the rear of the truck and dropping the carrier bearing is all that needs to happen, or complete removal of the drive shaft.

I have a trip coming up and gonna need to do something soon

I'm sure you have fixed your driveshaft by now, but I thought i'd update the thread with part numbers. Mine was destroyed and I had a hard time finding them.

The boot is part number 232557, but the entire kit is 211932x. That comes with the boot, clamps, and grease.

Had the same issue as @overcast this weekend. Terrible design IMO. The shield semi-wrapped itself around the boot and sliced right through

 

Wish I saw this before it was too late.. I suffered the same fate. I’ve heard it’s good to add a grease nipple to the slip yoke while your at it as these trucks get a clunk for lack of grease. I guess with all the water going in there it washed out most of the grease

 

I got the advice that you can disconnect the clamps on the boot then take the two bolts off that hold the carrier bearing, then lower the center of the drive shaft where the center U-joint is located at the spline. It will come apart. (the weight of the two halves will pull the drive shaft apart and separate it at the spline.

I don’t have any thoughts on what you are trying to do.
But anytime you disconnect the drive shaft, make sure you chock the tires.
Don’t count on the parking brake to hold the truck. Even better would be to use jack stands.

 

Never tried it myself so I dont know if its possible or not.

Make sure you mark the DS so you can get it clocked or lined up exactly the same way it came apart when you go to reassemble.

 

There is a thread somewhere here on TW that discusses the addition of a zerk to be able to add grease to the slip joint. As I recall, someone who seemed knowledgeable about this pointed out that the joint is not designed to allow grease to be distributed properly just by adding a zerk, which sounds about right after seeing quite a few pictures of the separated splines/yoke.

In any case, given that this joint doesn’t give most people any trouble, getting it re-lubed with the proper type of grease should be a one-time maintenance item.

 

Don't see why that wouldn't work, but as others have said, make sure your wheels are chocked. And make sure you don't drop it on your head (don't want to get the splines all bloody).

I ripped the boot on my 3rd gen Tacoma drive shaft when that fuel tank heat shield bent and made contact with the boot. Terrible design. I now have a driveshaft clunk because the slip yoke is binding. I did a ton of searching around and found what looks like an OE replacement. got the calipers out and measured the old boot. I just ordered DANA

FWIW, the boot is sold separately from Toyota for the 2016+, part number is 37334-0K030, front clamp is 42345-0K290, rear is 42345-0K280.

what is this style of clamp called? anyone know what diameter is needed? dont really want to pay 15 dollars for a clamp.

 

"cv boot clamps" will get you going in the right direction. You could try to do a reverse lookup with Spicer to get better dimensions, or buy a variety pack, or just pay the $15 and be done

 

It's a single ear boot clamp, there are a few names for them, but if you look for a CV boot clamp you'll probably find what you're looking for.
