Old man emu 3 inch lift with heavy duty tow springs, Injen intake, ripp coils, Corsa exhaust, body armor front and back bumpers…sound system with 2 Rockford 8’s, everything else Alpine
Hey guys so I’m new to the truck upgrade game however I’m blessed enough to actually have the funds finally to do something’s I’ve always wanted to. I have a 2018 SR5 with the tow package. I own a landscaping business and will be pulling an enclosed trailer that will have about 4200lbs and never any more than 4500 tops. Right now my truck is gear hunting and just constantly shifting up and down while trying to pull the trailer at about 3000lbs but my new mower is coming in a couple weeks and it weighs another 1000. Also, it struggles to get up some steep hills where I live.I have added an old man emu 3 inch lift kit with the Dakar heavy duty spring also went to 32s Nitto Grappler 2 on the tires and 17 inch black rhino rims. Currently have a pedal commander also for fun. I’m trying to get the truck regeared but all the shops in my area act like they are either scared to do it or they don’t know anything about the truck even though it’s one of the most popular trucks in the country. I am about to add an Injen evo intake as well as a Corsa perfomance exhaust kit and Ripp coil pack…..what should I get it regeared to? I’m being told 4.88 gears and also 4.56….I’m most interested in the regearing because I know that’s where most of the power will come from and it will stop gear hunting on the highway…which should I do???

with what you are towing i think 4.88 will be what most replies are here.
find a shop that has done it before to the 3rd gen.

Regearing does not result in more power, but it might make the truck more drivable. Additionally, there is no evidence that aftermarket intake, exhaust, and coil packs increase engine output. The only viable ways to increase engine output are a supercharger ($$$$) and an ECU tune ($). Also, going back to SL rated all-season tires could give you a bit of extra performance and efficiency.

BTW, do your stated weights include the weight of the trailer?

In any case, there is a huge thread on gears here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-5-29-mega-thread.557305.

7x14 enclosed trailer. Landscaping setup. I have 2 stand on commercial mowers and basically every gas powered handheld that exists…

well if none of it adds any power at least it’ll get better MPG and sound good lol…and yes those numbers included weight of trailer.

None of that stuff you added, or gears you want change to are going stop gear hunting, or increase mpg. Your best bet is get a tune.

Op do the regear and get a tune. Skip the intake, exhuast and coil pack for later. Best performance come from the regear because it will keep you around the rpm with best torque and power. The tune will give you better fuel, power and smoother deliverly of power. Also get 4.88 gearing.
