So last year the frame on my 2nd gen got bent after being rear ended. So the bend occurred at the 2 points where the frame holds the hitch on, It’s a weak point. The end result was my truck was totalled.

So in order to prevent this from happening again, I’m thinking of cutting that point on my 3rd gen frame and just leaving the bottom part attached to continue to hold the hitch on, so if I do get rear ended again, that remaining part will bend off only at that cut point and it should spare the rest of my frame and thus my truck won’t be totalled.

I’ve included schematics of where I plan to cut my frame on both sides on my 2022 with 4,700 miles. I have my sawzall ready to do it this weekend.

While your at it cut off the front crash bar as that was where my 2nd gens frame got bent in an accident and totalled it.
    I thinks I smells a Friday Thread!

Once on an episode of Car Talk they had a guy who never buckled his seat belt because he thought he could see an accident coming and quickly move to the other side of the car.

    This reminds me of that.

Is this cut part of the frame replaceable, if not then any rear crash would still end with frame damage ?

Sounds like a good idea. It'll really increase the value of your fairly new truck

Will the hitch be properly supported with the frame cut? Also, if the frame is cut isn't that kinda like writing off the frame? I wouldn't cut the frame, how often do you get rear ended? Friday!

That frame part isn’t replaceable but if another rear crash does occur it would just bend off sparing the rest of the frame. It’s all about physics.

I’ll leave just enough attached to support the hitch. Don’t worry, Ive already thought this through.

Why stop there? I’d remove the frame entirely.

Actually the bed slamming into the cab causes a lot of damage also when rear ended.

Please be proactive and add some cuts in the bed to ensure it will properly crumple before doing damage.
