Figured I’d document my build in the hopes of getting ideas and spreading any knowledge I can bestow onto anyone.. though little.

This is another drawer build but I wanted to take inspiration from goose gear and tackle my own comprehensive slide build and pick up some more tools along the way.

    Day 1

(This will be short but I created the base to what my entire build will take shape on.)

    Day 2 + some change

I had to make a few runs to woodcraft, a Local supplier of awesome wood working tools and Fine Lumber to pick up some more Baltic Birch.
I was originally going to build the supporting structure with aluminum extrusions but now that I’ll be lifted with the OME Heavy duty kit..I’m not so scared of the extra weight. I also wanted to build with wood.

I was able to source some 60x60 sheets of Baltic birch which made it easy as far as building supports and creating a monolithic bed platform. I didn’t want to have two separate boards for this.

Will have some time this Memorial Day weekend to get the meat and potatoes done so I can start working on the slides. Im thinking of going a little old school and doing wood with self lubricating plastic guides for one of the drawers that will hold camping gear and investing in a heavy duty set of 500 lb bearing slides for the work surface slide. Not quite sure yet!

I'm excited to see how this goes! I started thinking about a bed slide the last few days. I looked into the Slide Master AM2/AM3. They look nice but they are pretty pricey and weight ~115lbs for the double extension version. How full extension do you plan to go with?

I’m only going to do 36” drawers with dual hatches in the rear for my clothes and incidentals.
Right now I’m trying to figure out how to go about routing out the material perfectly to have flush hatches.

need to also buy the 50 dollar rabbit router bit @-@ to do it... plus make the jig!!

My long term plan is to have everything sorted in cubbies inside the drawers to keep things from rattling + I have 20 or so pelican case inserts to dispense of so I want to have secure storage for my gear so it doesn’t move while driving.

This is great! Been trying to search to see what people have done. I don't want to pay $1000+ for a decked system. But I don't have a camper or tonneau cover so it'll be exposed. What would you recommend since it will be exposed?

I honestly wouldn’t have a system like I’m building exposed to rain and the elements unless you were to Powdercoat and seal every piece. I am spar urethane coating everything with 2 coats and hoping that should be enough, however I have a soft top. Baltic birch is a great material and will last a lifetime if taken care of also.

I’ll have to scratch my noggin for your case... but metal construction and plastic could be a great material selection for you since it will be exposed.

    Day 3

it’s been a hot one in Texas! I got 6 hours yesterday on the build and boy was it productive. I finally took off the sled and coated the underside with spar urethane and reinstalled; this time anchoring it completely on all four corners and center to the bed. It ain’t going anywhere!

I’m using a “Krefeld Pocket Jig” to secure the verticals to the base and now that I have all of that done the cabinet is next! The cool thing is that I got those pieces pre cut with my hand saw and should be set to build and mount with my 500 lb bed slides.

the left compartment is going to be on bearing slides and the right will be a platform slide on low friction plastic and wood guides.

    Day 4,

had to help the misses around the yard but I had a few chances to mess with the truck! I got the drawer frame built and it slides pretty effortlessly with the slides not even mounted with hardware. I still need to plane out the sides a bit to make it glide but I think she’s almost done!!

The components are coming together and I cannot wait to see this come together. I’m going to spend the next couple of days trying to get some work done but it’s going to be hard with all the forecasted rain.

    Day 5

I got some great progress in!

drawer slides installed. Coatings roughed in and will be adding coats over the next couple of days.

Going to get the platform slide installed during the week sometime.(right slide is a plastic (self lubricating) slide.

I will also be coating the top deck daily for a week before installing so that it is the most protected! And smooth.

Today was awesome... I don’t know what got into me but I got some big milestones complete today.

    first off...

    drawer pull cut out..

Drawer hardware locks fabricated and installed. Now I can slam lock it and pull out and it will auto lock.

The bed top has now been officially installed. It is one piece and I had to take everything, including the side rails to put it in.

I’ve started screwing it to the verticals however I will be taking my time with this to allow everything to settle.

    Pictures....

Got my lithium phosphate batteries in to power incidentals at night such as lights, laptops and mobile hotspots. Everything is coming together! I have a trip to New Mexico in a week so can’t wait to try the platform out and find any weak points to fix!

Looks good! One of these days I'll stop being lazy and attempt to build a similar setup myself.

On the right-hand opening, what's the white pieces of material under the bottom of the sliding piece of plywood?

Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMW) plastic.
It’s the same self lubricating type plastic used to make table saw sleds glide with ease.
It’s awesome stuff and the right sled even with around 50-100 pounds of gear on it just slides effortlessly.

Thanks for all the info. Especially with the plastic slides. I’m trying to save some money and hoping the plastic is a bit more cost effective over the heavy duty drawer slides.

You think it could handle 200lbs or so? With a little elbow grease....

Hey! I completely fell off the face of the earth when Covid happen. “Public safety” and all…

Coming back and having moved to California and New Mexico (splitting my time between the two) the east glide plastic stuff still works great. I’ve probably had 200 lbs on it and it still slides.

I never got a chance to recoat the wood but it’s held up fairly well..

my next objective once I get a house in California is to take it all apart and dip it all in resin to seal it for good.

    happy camping!
