I'm going to use this thread so I dont have to create a new thread people have to search thru.

I bought a topper that was sold as a First Gen Tacoma topper. his pictures where low quality. I asked if the back window would lock the tailgate, "yes but I dont have the keys to the latches", which means he never tried to lock it... I understood and drove the 1 hour drive to go buy it. On arriving, its already off on his tacoma and there were spacers sitting on top of the fiberglass topper. At that point I started to realize this is not going to fit correctly... as a direct bolt on as I wanted.

    Welp I bought it anyway.:annoyed:
I dont believe at all that the seller did this on purpose, he had just gotten the truck and didn't want the topper for his type of hauling.

we used clamps to hold it to the bed and it held all the way home.

After further inspection, I do believe this topper is for the OG Toyota Truck.
With adding the spacers to lift the topper up above the ext-cab third brake light and not rub on the ext-cab rear cab, the locking latches become useless because now its 5/8" above the tailgate. :annoyed:
as it sets without spacer, about 1-1/2" overhang at rear and pushed as far as possible while resting on the third brake light:

I had searched for a month to find a topper that would fit, even using the link in the OG post above, trying to use different truck models, and saw here on TW that people have waited 6+ months, to a year to find one. So I decided just to make this work.
    #modtime. :thumbsup::spending:

measured the width of brake light and added a bit because the body work flares out next to the light.

Taped the outside to hold the fiberglass in place. those toppers are very thick fiberglass.
This was my first time using fiberglass. Went well IMO.
$31 for a kit at O'rielies. gloves and a paint brush. I put 4 layers on and still have 3/4 left of the fiberglass kit.

I though about using bondo to make smooth but the location up top is rarely seen. So I added a bit of exterior window and trim chaulk and sanded it "smooth"

tape around and a cheap white rattle can paint job

looked like this after 3-4 coats

It sits pretty on the driver side, nice gap between the cab and the topper, its a bit tighter on the passenger side. I need to loosen all bolts and shift a little to straighten it out better.
Maybe a 1/2" rear overhang. about width of my pinky. :headbang:

and the new wide brake light gap.

I went to locksmith and got new keys made and bought new 14" shocks from Amazon for the window, all is working as expected.

Looks like you did the best you could with what you had to work with. Looks okay to me though.

Be careful if/when you take the truck off-road because the bed does move around depending upon how bad the "road" is, and the topper and cab will chafe and wear the paint away where they rub against each other.

    thanks man.
I was thinking about trying to put a white rubber seal along the cab & topper to keep the rub from messing up the paint, if it doesn't make it look tacky that is.
