Be careful, the 0 - 20 is super runny and prone to splashing.

I found that out during my first oil change. The stuff comes like water. That’s why I modified a bucket for the next time. I think it’ll work good.

Got a friend at church that is a retired Toyota mechanic. He told me use whatever brand of oil you want, whatever brand of oil filter you want but do not use an aftermarket oil filter canister housing. He said the bypass valve on many of those is not up to spec, if that valve fails or works poorly you lose an engine. He said why take the chance, just get a Toyota oil filter housing, they aren’t that expensive anyway. Makes sense to me, I bought one and will keep it as a spare in case I crack or damage mine. I may never need it, but it won’t rot sitting on the shelf.

Gotta love that this thread is 2.5 years old and still gong strong. Those oil drain pans the OP used suck!

The "bypass valve" is an interesting area to review when swapping out.

I need to take a better pic...and I will...of the center component that is swapped out with the plastic unit.

Pictured is the OEM Aluminum Oil Filter Housing, 15620-31060 + Plug, 15643-31050

    The Plastic Housing Part#1562036020.

I thought my drain pan would be different. I watched videos on the splash zone even. And yet, I got a little on my face. There’s always the 15k oil change to improve my tactics.

Others recommend this valve from ValvoMax ... tube that runs directly into a container to prevent splashing out of a pan: https://www.valvomax.com/pages/product-result?steps=171804-35765-171144&wizardId=22

And the Motivx drain tube if the filter wrench does get stuck and become more troublesome: https://www.motivxtools.com/pages/product-result?rq=yr_toyota~uh_2022~wz_tacoma-3-5l-v6~eh_cartridge

I will be using both when my freebie oil changes vanish at end of year. Both redirect oil completely AROUND the skid plate instead of the plate getting splashed.

Is everyone just using the basic OEM Tacoma filter? It appears there is also a TRD version?

I just use the OEM Toyota oil filter. It’s about half the price of a Wix or Purolator. It’s my belief that the OEM filter is as good as most, if not all of the other brands unless someone can provide evidence they are not. I didn’t know there was a TRD version.

I bought a TRD filter once just as a goof. It was like $5 more than the regular one. Only difference I noticed was it came with a green gasket and had a metal end. It is nothing special, just TRD badged garbage like the rest of it.

0 weight oil comes out in a hurry for sure. Warm 0 weight comes out like it is pressurized. I need to improve my pan game as well.
For all the complaining people do about the cartridge, the plug on the pan makes far more of a mess IME.

Yeah there is a TRD oil filter but it's almost double the price. I doubt it filters oil twice as good so not worth the extra coin. Just change the oil and filter in a timely manner and you'll be fine.

Here's what I found on the TRD Oil Filter.

Isn't the anti drain back and bypass valve in our engine integrated in to the filter housings or filter covers? So the benefit of the TRD filter is a 100% synthetic filter media and the metal ends with silicon gaskets from what I can see.

Not sure if I'd pay extra for that, however if your intentions were longer drain intervals it might be worth it.

My local dealer/parts counter only carries the regular filter for $6. TRD is ~$13 plus shipping. Intrigued, but will pass this time.

Most of the online parts places sell the oil filter bulk I think I paid $20 for 6 OEM filters. Probably a bit more with inflation now though

Y'all that get splashed are you taking the filler cap and filter off before the sump plug?

Yep same here and with the TRD skid plate it was impossible not to get it on top of the skid. The Valvomax plug changed that. Little pricey but made of steel not soft brass, more streamline and it drains pretty quick. AND NO MESS!
