I would be honest with your neighbor and tell him you had no idea that the truck was in no way road worthy, and belongs in a scrap yard. Perhaps he would be willing to take scrap value from you as a payment and refund whatever you paid him that is more than that.
Those pics are hard to look at. That truck is absolute toast.

honestly, if that frame is that bad. that truck despite all of the low mileage bits its worth scrap value. unless you find a line on another truck that has a dead motor on the cheap. even then sitting 5 yrs there could be a lot of issues from sitting or parts that needs to be swapped around too.

I'm still in counseling from battling rust on two first gens and an 88 SR5. I'm doing a lot better now....... the voices in my head are gone and my tic has calmed down.
Better make sure you have a good health plan that covers this stuff.
    I would part it out.

I would not want that vehicle anywhere near me on the highway.

139,000? That's nothing for a Taco.... I drive a 05 Taco Base model with 250,000 miles on her...had to dump some money into repairs naturally...but runs like a champ! What a beast this truck is. Love it

The only way I’d think of this is to figure out cost of frame and parts + cost of time (you get to decide your wage) + 20% to allow for estimating errors.

If that total sounds like less that you’d pay for a nice 2005, then go for it.
