When I picked my new to me 07, the oil cap had the white shake on it. PO lived in Morro Bay and drove it all of 2 miles to work and back home. Never got up to proper temp. Poor thing.

Moved to RI from SC 3 months ago. Never had this issue in SC, but was using the truck more and doing some highway driving. It’s been cold here in RI and wet and I’ve been sick for a month with Covid and a cold so all of my driving had been like 1 mile to grocery store, pharmacy or to family’s houses. So I’m thinking not enough use/high temp operation. Took truck to a St. Paddies gathering today 45 min run on highway and ran 4th gear. Hoping some highway operation solves my issue and will make sure to run it more and hard more often.

It's moisture, period. My truck does the same thing, with a 6mi drive to work. Wipe that crap out best you can then go drive on the highway for awhile.

Same as what everyone else is saying... On my old '07 that had about 60K miles on it and my commute was 3 miles. It only made it to highway speeds probably once a week and I had the same build up. Lived in PNW weather, garage kept. Meticulously maintained with Mobil 1. It was alarming at first, but I started running it a little longer and would at least let it heat up to operating temp. I would clean out the gunk with a q tip. I did one round trip of about 1500 miles after a fresh oil change and didn't have any gunk. Still not thrilled about it, but it's probably okay.

Where did you get the PCV valve? I had looked into it a while ago and Toyota wanted a lot for it if I remember. If I can get the part number I’m sure I can get it on Amazon or somewhere else for a better price.

Update. Did a 45 min highway run in 4th last night and the sludge has not returned. Will continue to monitor it and drive truck more to get it to temp.

Go to Parts.Toyota.com and search with your truck year/details. I believe it was part 12204-31030 for mine and costs under $10.

Mine rarely gets driven during the weekdays and on weekends it’s mostly short trips.

To help combat the problem. After driving away from a morning cold start after a couple minutes to get a little temperature in the engine. Then I’ll just leave it in a lower gear to bring the rpm’s up higher. I usually do somewhere around 60-120 seconds. If I don’t do that I end up with what you’re seeing. After I started doing it, I haven’t seen it again.

Agreed. I think I paid about $6. Your dealer is trying to pull a fast one.

Short trips not getting it up to operating temperature is more abusive than most know. I’ve seen many crank and cam position sensors fail from the moisture.

Well it seems everyone has this problem must be a lot of blown head gaskets etc. Wonder why no one has mention catch cans? Drive more worry less. Mine has done this from new 160K miles ago.

Have had my truck going on 16 years... never had this happen. Do a lot of short trips where truck never gets up to operating temperature. I live in a dry environment though... not much humidity. :notsure:

Been ripping it on the highway and did an oil change and changed PCV and all seems well now. PCV may have been contributing it was pretty gummed up didn’t have as much rattle as the new one I installed. No more truffle butter in oil fill

Next oil change send sample of your oil to Blackstone Labs. It will will give you an idea of your engine condition.

Seen the same thing but only during the winter. With the long plastic oil filler tube the area near and including the cap never gets hot and as mentioned moisture can condense. Come spring/summer/fall and above zero temps and its never there.

He definitely has something other than too many short trips. A little build up can be attributed to that but what he has is excessive.

Agreed. I only see a little of the stuff inside the oil filler cap. That I consider normal. His is indeed way beyond that.

When it's happened to me it's been a white creamy color, not yellowish.
