Rear diff oil weight?

    Take it back to the dealer for the diff whine/howl and at least get it documented with the service department. Gear lash, shimming or something else is fubar. I went with oem fluids in the impossible to open and dispense cans, because I was able to get it for about the same price as redline 75w-85 gl5.

    Amsoil or Valvoline
    $28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75w-90 was a close second, but they both include limited slip additives which aren't recommended for trd off road diffs. Probably not a concern for sr5's. Get full synthetic whatever you choose.

    I’ve got Lucas 75-90 in front diff and transfer case and 75-140 in the rear. After getting the first break in fill out I think a quality synthetic will last a long long time.

    I use Red Line 75w90 for the rear. Lost exactly 1mpg vs the old 75w85. Howling is still there, but its duration is noticeably shorter.

    I think amsoil is a little thicker and that’s why. I added about a quart to my rear differential because it was under filled and it quieted it up surprisingly. This was at 2500 miles. I didn’t notice any noise until about 500 miles on the odometer.
