I've had their flat metal side caps for some time now, they do look good

to fit my softopper, I had to shave down the clamps some. And still need to more. It just kept clogging my bench grinder wheel because it's aluminum.

Am thinking about switching to a hardshell. Would they be compatible?

Did you ever find a solution? I'm debating installing this on my truck but I need to ensure compatibility with my Softopper.

I have the KB Voodoo bed caps and had an issue when I went to reinstall my Jason (fiberglass hard shell) tonneau cover. The lower profile of the KBV made the angled frame of the tonneau hang over the cargo rails so that the clamps for the tonneau would no longer fit. My solution was to get some 3/4” x 1.5” aluminum rectangular tubing to raise the tonneau frame enough to install the clamps. (lower end of the clamp fits inside the slot in the cargo rails) works great. The aluminum tubing is sandwiched between the tonneau frame and the KBV caps if that helps to visualize it.

    Yep.
VooDoo rails and ARE shell here.

My fix was 1x4 boards - primed and painted black post fit - contoured to the shell with "topper seals" on both sides. This filled the void perfectly. The now larger gaps in the front corners were filled with foam seals and RTV.
