My truck was ready for new pads and rotors. I've changed them on other cars before, but never this truck. As I tried to compress the caliper cylinders, one popped open and dumped fluid...completely new to my limited mechanical "expertise." After finishing the pad/rotor change, the pedal sinks right to the floor and little brake power is applied. Is this a matter of now having to bleed and flush the lines? Or is the caliper screwed?

Please be kind--new to this process. Thank you in advance!

    Rick

Probably air in the lines now. Bleed and flush needed now

I believe what you are saying is a piston popped out?
If so, you need to bleed the system. Hopefully it didn’t leak down passed the ABS module. If air gets into the ABS module, it can be a real job to bleed them.
You might need a scan tool with ABS bleed function to get the air out.

Yeah, it popped out out of the caliper housing.
There wasn't a "ton" of fluid, maybe 1/8th cup at the very most.

    It all depends.
I’d try a tradition bleed. You might be just fine.
If you find that the pedal just won’t return to normal, you might need the help of a scan tool.
You “could” do it the hard. Find a dirt or gravel road, apply the brakes hard and fast to activate the ABS and force air out of the module. But it’s a PITA doing it that way.

Again, bleed them the traditional way.
See what happens. 1/8 cup isn’t too much.

If the piston popped out, you'll need to bleed the line.

Depending on how much rust and dirt was on the piston when you popped it back in, there's a chance a leak might develop at the piston seal, but you'll know if that happens.

Now comes the issue of limping to the auto store down the street
Thank you, fellas. Now comes the issue of limping to the auto store down the road for a bleed kit.

^Bleed kit is not needed. Just be sure to have a bottle of DOT3 or DOT4 on hand.
    1. Fill the reservoir.
    2. Press the start button twice to turn on electrical power without starting the engine.
    3. Hold down the pedal with a stick against the seat cushion. You'll hear the brake pump run.
    4. Open the bleeder and wait for a steady stream to come out. Close the bleeder.
    5. Release the brake pedal.
    6. Fill the reservoir.
    7. Hose down any surfaces splashed with brake fluid.

Nice, I didn’t know that about the 3rd Gens.
I’m still on 1st Gen technology in my early 2nd Gen. Vacuum Booster

^Not all 3rd gens, just TRD OR/Pro, same with 2nd gen TRD OR from 2009 onward.

At home, I still use a bleeder bottle made from a Nestea bottle and clear vinyl tubing, just to contain the mess. The vinyl tubing hardens with age and needs to be replaced yearly.
