Well… wrecked my truck last Friday night. The bridge coming into my neighborhood froze over, cars were sliding everywhere and I did my best to avoid them but ended up hitting the barrier on my front passenger side trying to get into the shoulder and avoid the guy in front of me but I ended up sliding into the side of him with my drivers side. The passenger front suspension is most likely gone. The wheel was bent inward and the uca was rubbing the tire. Tie rod, lca, cv axle etc. I was in 4wd when it happened so hopefully it didn’t jack anything else up. And of course body damage. A shop is looking it over today to see what all needs to be done :(

Big oof. That sucks. Hopefully "it'll buff right out" with the help of the insurance. Fingers crossed for nothing more than a bent spindle.

My truck was totaled within a month or so when the new owner hit a barrier. Red trucks love barriers.

Hopefully, they want to try and fix it which is good. If they total it I doubt i'll get the true value out of it so if it's fixable i'll go that route and most likely sell it and get me another one.

    Anyone here in mtn biking?
I've had an itch to get a bike for a while now and I think I'm going to finally get a bike for this summer. With that, I've been doing a fair bit of research on what to know, brands, pros/cons, etc. I'm definitely going with a hardtail as it seems thats where everyone agrees as a starter. My brand options are limited since I want to spend $500 or less for a bike - there is a selection out there but it varies greatly and I don't know exactly what I'm looking at.

Anyone have any advice for basically anything mtn bike related?

    Thanks!

I used to haul my stingray (late sixties) up mountains to ride down, and did a lot of creek riding. Later I got a "real" mountain bike that was never as comfortable to ride in the woods and over obstacles. If I was to get one today I'd do a custom build. Something sixteen inches with all the gearing, suspension, and brakes.

    Not much stock left.
I purchased a Specialized Stumpjumper last summer after riding an REI special for a couple years. Huge difference.

Yes, the Specialized was substantially more in money, but damn! No comparison. I was at Hangar 15 a couple weeks ago and they were having a big sale on their Specialized bikes.

for 500 or less, you'll be very limited, tbh. unless you can find a good used one. come on over here and start talking with us:

As cool and fun as it is to get something new I for once have to be an adult and not spend my money so recklessly.
So I’m definitely buying a used one.

I had 2 different Specialized BMX bikes growing up and they were great bikes. The reading I’ve done on their mtn bikes thus far seems to hold the same thoughts.
I’ve found a couple used ones on KSL/Marketplace that are in my price range. I just want to gather as much info as possible beforehand.

thank you all for your input tho.

    One. Of. Us!

    PJ_DSC0815.jpg

For that budget, you're def smart to buy used. You'll get far more bike, especially right now, for that money used than you ever would new. You'll also be buying sketchy or clapped out full sus for that money so looking for a hardtail will serve you well. Might I interest you in bumping your budget to $1,000? Having recently searched for local used bikes in that space, the difference in bike (new or used) that you'll get for the extra $500 is an order of magnitude better in terms of spec and quality.

Not trying to be bike snob, but want you to be happy with what you get and feel you got good value for money.

Bike market has tanked these days post-covid / during-"not a recession". Seems like every brand is selling bikes for a good discount.

I forgot you bought a stumpy. We'll have to go ride once spring finally decides to happen.

Fair. Yeah, I'd echo what @Gunshot-6A said. if you can afford to bump to 1k, your used options expands like crazy. check out ksl/facebook (gear swap)/pinkbike (i know, it sounds funny but that's very common buy-sell for mountain bikers). Hell, for 1k, you MIGHT be able to find a shop willing to let go of last year's model hardtail or a similarly lightly-used one.

I get that money can be tight, so don't be discouraged and make it part of the fun. A little patience can pay off big bonuses. There are always good deals to be had if you aren't in a big hurry.

The people encouraging you to up your game are giving cheap advice. It isn't them that will suffer the consequences of spending what should be used elsewhere. And as with anything, getting a bike is going to be a matter of degrees in satisfaction. A guy that spends X number of dollars is always going to see something they would have liked the next day for X+1.

Some of the best deals I've gotten were the result of short money and the patience to find the good deal. Once you spend your money you won't have it, so if the really great used bike suddenly shows up you will have spent your money. Cash makes you more powerful than a guy with a poor impulsive purchase. I'd rather have $500 in my hand three weeks from now when I see something that will be good for me, than having a $1000 bike that I settled for today.
