Sometimes Tacomaworld can make you believe that your truck is going to shit the bed any day now. And yep, obviously some do have serious issues that happen.

And when they happen, sometimes people post about them here. But here’s the thing, there’s literally hundreds of thousands of 3rd gens with 3.5s in North America. So even when you look at what looks like more than a few people (really unfortunate, I feel for them) with motor issues posting about them here and then compare it to the people who post here who’ve never seen anything major go wrong it’s still a small percentage.

In the real world it’s a REALLY small percentage having serious issues because you tend to hear about problems and rarely about something working. It’s a machine. It’s subject to so many little things that could go wrong in the manufacturing or design process but all vehicles are and it’s just the percentage of flaws over the volume. The Tacoma has relatively few major issues in comparison to many other car makers. So it comes down to how unlucky are you?

Whatever makes you feel better man.

Consider the amount of people that have problems with their Tacoma and don't even know that truck forums exist and will never post on one. I'm sure it's a big number.

In a reality none of us know how many people truly have issues with their tacoma other than Toyota. The number could be way higher or lower than what any of us think.

Saying the Tacoma has fewer major issues than other brands is just an opinion. None of us truly know.

    That’s true of most things.
You don’t hear about it until something goes wrong.
If nothings wrong, there’s nothing to talk about.

I know my truck will break eventually.
Am I worried about? Only if it’s a long walk home

I tend to see more high mileage used Toyotas and Hondas being sold than other makes and models if that’s any type of reference point. Friends of mine that drive domestic trucks seem to have a different concept of what high mileage is. They seem to be more scared of vehicles with over 150k and more hesitant to pile the miles on like Toyota owners. Like you said though it’s hard to know the real numbers. That being said there is a reason other manufactures have adopted manufacturing processes created and refined by Toyota. I think you could make a pretty strong historical argument.

Three 2nd genners are the first ones to reply and cast doubt on 3rd Gen reliability.

Close the thread… we have expert, first-hand insights of the facts now :boink:

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just don't get the 2nd gen vs. 3rd gen thing and why one needs to bash the other. If you're happy with your truck that's great, doesn't matter what model year it is.

Looks like they’ve finally got us over a barrel with their superior logic on this one, so time to fess up.

Toyotas aren’t really reliable, it’s all been one big conspiracy perpetrated so that for the last 8 years we could trick others into buying our Gen3 trucks at top dollar when of course they blow up. Also, may as well admit that most of the 22R’s ever made actually exploded and were secretly buried in a landfill, the 1GR was designed by Fiat, and FJ Cruisers melt when left in the sun. And the Tacoma owners who on this site who say their trucks are reliable? All paid actors.

I’m sure it’s only matter of time before the files are declassified.

My fuel tank door was slightly askew from the factory and I had to manually adjust it with my own tools and time. Never been so disappointed with a new vehicle purchase. Honestly, is Toyota even trying anymore?

That's not even the worst of it. I just had to replace my OEM wiper blades this very week because after 3 years of the factory ones sitting in the desert sun and winters, one of them started to de-laminate!

Can you imagine?! What if I had been going 70mph and an inch and a half of my vision was obscured? Could have been tragedy.

Yeah I don’t get it either, both are great trucks. We all have a choice so drive what you enjoy and be happy.

My truck has a serious flaw and I couldn't be more upset about it.

It has far too many bolts to attach aftermarket do-nothings that I saw on Instagram, and my credit card can't handle the strain anymore.

This is skewed arithmetic. There are folks that have problems with their 'Tacos but don't live and breathe here on this forum 24x7. They don't report it here. So you can't really put a finger on the enormity (or not) of issues.
