I just bought a 2020 Toyota Tacoma SR5 that come with factory rims, I upgraded and bought rims offline that come off of a 2023 Toyota Tacoma, but the shop that put the tires on my new rims which did not have the sensors and said they could not get my TPMS sensors off to place on my new rims. Do I need to buy new sensors or did they not know what they are doing? If I have to buy news sensors, can I buy them online and then take it have them placed? They quoted my $65.00 for each wheel but I saw online where there are cheaper. Thanks in advance for your help.

Old TPMS can be reused but…they could need “rebuild kits”. I doubt the shop wanted to deal with the headache. $65 x 4 sounds about right. They have a special tool to program as well. Not cheap either way.

pull the fuse for the Tpms light and buy a $7.99 gauge…act like it’s 1920-2005 when people checked their air pressure

Looks like you went from steel wheels to alloy wheels. The sensors are angled different and will not fit the alloy wheels. You will need new sensors.

Is there a fuse that goes to that one light? If so, where is it located. I looked under the dash and under the hood but did not see one labeled for it. From what I read it is combined with other things. Any help would be appreciated.

The fuse that powers the TPMS also powers a few other things. So there is no disabling the TMPS light. Just get the correct sensors for alloy wheels and have them programmed to the truck.

Or just ignore the light and check the pressure manually.

    Ooooohhhhh! Technology bad! Scary!

Ignore the old people pining for their youth and buy new sensors. As stated above, make sure you get the right kind for your new wheels as there are different angles for steel and alloy. If I were in your shoes I’d use a different shop, since from what you’ve shared, it sounds like the last guys don’t know what they’re doing or couldn’t be bothered to do what you wanted.
If you aren’t in a hurry you can watch the buy/sell/trade section here. I picked up 4 sensors from a member for $35 shipped that were a year or so old, and bought rebuild kits for like $8 total at Napa.
Alternatively you could possibly reuse your old sensors. I’ve read here that you can flip the sensors upside down when installing to clear the improper angle but don’t have any experience with that.

Rock Auto sells them for about a hundred bucks for four. I bought a set, already programmed just had to learn them to my truck.

I paid $60-$80 each for 3 sets of sensors on Amazon. One for a 2010 Wrangler, a 2014 F150, and my 2007 Tacoma. I bought them prior to buying new tires for the Tacoma and F150. I wasn't charged anything extra to have them installed and programmed with new tires. The old sensors were still working BTW, but I knew they would never outlast another set of tires, so I replaced them before they died.

The Wrangler I bought used with aftermarket wheels and no sensors. The tire store charged me $10/tire to install and program those.

That was 2-5 years ago and they are all working fine. New sensors aren't that expensive, keep working sensors in your truck.

How do you check them while driving without sensors. They were never intended to replace an air gauge, but to warn the driver of a sudden deflation while driving. I've had 2 incidents where my warning light came on when I was driving 70-75 mph due to road debris puncturing the tire. Without the sensors I'd have had tires come apart at 70-75 mph. With working sensors I was able to get the truck stopped and off the road before it went completely flat. That is what they are designed to do. And they work well.

It only costs $6-$8 per year to keep working sensors in your truck. I can't one meal a year at McDonalds for that.

My buddy and I traded complete wheels so I ended up with his sensors and he with mine. We both obviously have the TPMS light on. Is there a way to tie the sensors to the trucks? By the way - factory Tacoma wheels and sensors that operated fine. One truck a 2018 and one a 2021. Thanks for any help

You will have to take it somewhere and get his sensors programmed to your truck.

90% of people only get the sensors programmed because like me, they’re OCD about lights being on the dash.
