I'm going to set up an amatuer radio station in my 16. I've done this before so I know all about grounding and wire gauge.

Has anyone determined or have an idea of a good wire feed through option from engine compartment?

I see the vents behind back seat with I can dremal holes for coax and power.

Under the hood I don't see anything easy and haven't checked well the chassis.

I have a nice mount solution using the receiver hitch and will post pics.

    Ideas?

    Thanks

I ran my ditch light wiring through an existing pass through on the driver side of the firewall. There is a rubber flange that you can cut a slit in, and push wire through. It will come out above the driver side footwell. I can go snap a pic of it, if you need help finding it.

Passenger side is probably easiest... less congested than the driver side. Pics of what I did for my front camera . . .

Currently, I took one of the grommets and put in a new grommet that was open not filled, and ran wires through there. Others use the major passthrough that has a larger loom on it. Th eother option is to make a new hole.

I ran mine through the driver's firewall grommet, but there's another one on the floor under the back seat.

Plenty grommets on cab floor. No drilling.

On my Tundra, I drilled a hole along the edge of the large grommet on the drivers side to pass the coax and power wires through - pulled them through with a wire. When I had a bed mount antenna on it, I went through a grommet underneath and into the wiring channel that runs under the door sill molding. I have not installed my radio in my new Tacoma yet, but I see it has the same grommet on the drivers side. I'm going with a hood mount that uses an existing fender bolt for my antenna ( 2m/70cm, so it's not a large wind load). While I have not pulled up the sill trim yet, it looks like it should be the same as the Tundra, with a wiring channel underneath. I'm going to place the radio under the drivers seat, running the head unit cable, extension microphone cable, and speaker wire back through the wiring channel to get under the dash. Before I traded in the Tundra, I pulled out the radio. the holes in the grommet closed back up and you can't tell it was there. KB8DLR

I second this, that wire is going to get cut and short out real quick. Not to mention any time it rains water is going to come up through the giant hole in the floor.

No loom on the added wires either. Only the sheaf to "protect"...

Mainly because you loom the wires before you zip tie them to everything, and the grommet has a hole in the center so you have to run the wires through the grommet to seal it properly.

Think of what we are saying as constructive criticism that will help insure what your doing lasts along time. caribe makaira is one of our top electrical guys here, Im a hack but I can make things work really well, we know what we are talking about.

Just ran my coax GMRS antenna cable through the a/c drip hose hole, pull back the carpet about an inch to expose the rubber hose…..pull said hose out feed large wire and NMO connector through into the engine bay and stick the rubber hose back in the hole. Super easy and grommet is already there and it keeps the coax cable away from any power wires that would screw up reception etc.

What keeps the antenna cable from being severed due to truck bounce?:burp:

Looks very protected. Secured from any other movement before and after the grommet too I take it...
