That’s amazing, that JL has seen some stuff. I’m a big fan of JL and the 10W0V3-4 I started with sounded really good but was, like you mentioned, too quiet. My mids and highs drowned it out a bit and it only started to hit alright at high volume. The extra wattage in the Alpine setup just gets the cone moving more and gives the louder, deeper bass I was looking for and the ability to feel it at lower volumes too. The Alpine is unique as it’s the only non-shallow-mount style 10” I found that could handle 600W RMS but is still shallow enough to fit in the enclosure behind my seat. Like you said, definitely an upgrade but doesn’t blow me away either. I’m not sure a single 10” in a fairly shallow box really can but the Alpine does a great job for what it is.

Y'all keep posting pictures and you just might convince me to get off my butt and build the box I've been contemplating for the last few years.

Also, good to hear that about the Alpine. It'll likely be my sub of choice.

I had sorta settled on this Polk: https://www.crutchfield.com/S-40ZLW...wRnbpfjxW5rOE3RaJoas3bDr_lQQDIK4aAk73EALw_wcB as my amp is a 300W RMS / 1000W Max. It was $55 around the holidays and I'm sort of kicking myself for not jumping on it.

    Thinking about the same setup:

Did you have to do any trimming?
Does it move any when you take a turn?
Where did you mount the amp?

no trimming needed and the subwoofer stays at the location when turning. I installed the small amp under the driver seat. I have factory head unit.

Would running 2 10" subs off a 3rd gen stock head unit (non JBL) with line converter to amp be completely useless if I didn't intend to replace the stock door speakers/tweeters? Obviously I'd want to do that eventually, but would it be reasonable for just getting some extra bass for the time being? I've found a pretty good deal locally that I'm thinking of jumping on, but keep reading some conflicting things on aftermarket speakers actually being helpful or not with the stock head unit, so trying to figure things out.

That would be just fine, might be a little overpowering with the stock speakers, but you can always turn the amp down a bit.
Stock headunit is just fine with aftermarket speakers, it will sound better if you run them with a amp, but you dont need to replace the stock unit.

Thanks! I’m thinking of trying to score some subs and amp locally, and seeing how it sounds, and going for the Subaru tweeters to try and help the balance a little more.

Anyone have any insight into USED amp/sub prices? I'm checking out 2 Rockford Fosgate P1's and Prime R2-500X1 amp in a box locally, but no clue what a fair price would actually be. Don't want to overpay, and also don't want to completely low-ball on an offer. No wiring included as far as I can tell.

I looked at that same JL box and almost chose it over the stealthbox. It'll fit, but you'll have to remove the plastic bins.

Weekend project completed!!!! very satisfied with the clean loud sound despite no DSP processor; the cleanliness of the 5 channel Kenwood in conjunction with hertz components, hertz coaxials and 10 inch Audison sub. I tried the 10 inch TW1JL Audio from my other truck but the Audison was a better fit and like the tight bass sound from it. The plus it’s that I was able to keep trimming of the left panel very minimum although the right panel did not fit I didn’t wanted to destroy it so I’ll be customizing/improvising a different cover.
Other than that I’m impressed with the clean sound and no rattles whatsoever after installing the deadening material. This task was probably the most time consuming but well worth it. It also reduced a great amount of road noise
Here are the components, hopefully I don’t miss something but let me know if you have questions I can get more detailed pictures.
PAC Amp Pro (under Factory Radio) straight plug and play
Hertz Mille Pro 165 2 way components (front stage)modified the triangle plates on top of the front door to fit the tweeters.
This will be a project in its own to re-mount with fiber glass just to correct staging
    Hertz Mille coaxiales (Rear)
Audison 10 inch sub driver side rear deck
5 Chanel Kenwood Excelon Reference (under passenger seat)
Metra deadening materials 4 doors, rear deck ( didn’t do the ceiling nor the whole floor due to time limitation)
New wiring by Metra 16 gauge for all speakers and 12 gauge for sub. amp install kit 4 gauge, Metra RCAs
Maintained the original sub for lack of not knowing what to do for now and the front dashboard 2 inch mid range speakers. Planning to replace with the 2.5 inch Audison Prima and run them with the factory amp

Thread title says subwoofer setups but it looks like there's a bunch more posted here than just subs, so throwing my hat in the ring. The sub setup itself isn't super elaborate like some of the builds on here, but the overall system came out absolutely fantastic! For the last month I've been working on installing an audio setup in my 2021 that would flow with the OEM+ styling I've been doing while bringing a bunch of clarity and a rear stage into the cabin. Wanted to greatly increase SQ while also making it look like nothing had been changed. I've done systems in a few vehicles by now and have always been a very analog system builder, so using an amp with DSP built in is a whole new challenge to tune, but it's getting there. A couple more hours and it should be dialed pretty well. I already have over 60 hours into this project, so what's another couple, right?

    Audio Setup:
    Headunit: Pioneer DMH-WC6600NEX
    Amplifier: JL Audio VX700/5i DSP
Front Stage: Focal Flax Evo PS 165 FXE Components
Rear Stage: Focal Flax Evo PC 165 FE Coaxial
Subwoofer: JL Audio Stealthbox w/ JL 10TW3-D4

    Extras & Integration:
iDatalink Maestro RR2 Interface Module w\ a bunch of adapters
NVX Silicone Speaker Baffles on each door speaker
JL Audio Water Resistant Master MAXI Fuse Block
    Full KnuKonceptz Wiring
OBD-II Splitter to keep the factory plug active while using the Maestro
45 sq/ft of Second Skin Damplifier Pro Deadening
36 sq/ft of Second Skin Heatwave Pro Thermal Insulation

The interior was already sound deadened prior to starting this project with Second Skin Damplifier Pro and Heatwave Pro Thermal insulation. This combo allows for very little exterior noise to enter the cabin even with an exhaust and 33" R/T tires.

Heatwave Pro going on the doors over top of the Damplifier Pro:

Rear wall after layering both materials (I went back and re-cut the holes for the cabin vents to be unobstructed after having difficulty closing the doors with them blocked off):

Under rear seat storage tray also covered:

Moving on to the actual audio installation:

I started with building a wedge-shaped amp rack to house the VXi out of 1/4" expanded PVC sheets. I wanted it to live in the rear driver side cubby and to match the contour of the panel. I had also added some grommets into the panel for wiring to pass thru (these ended up getting removed on install day and a single big hole was cut instead).

Rack after being wrapped in black Metra carpeting and secured in place using the brackets that I removed from the factory horns on the truck. It look way too long to construct, but for my first amp rack I don't think it came out too bad.

Stealthbox and VXi installed after many hours and about a whole day of trimming plastic to keep everything fitting like factory.

After a lot of searching and not wanting to mount the front crossovers in the doors I opted to mount the front crossovers in the rear seat cubby. Seemed like the best place to put them that would keep them hidden and protected. I put them both on the passenger side to keep as much usable storage space as possible. I also took some of the leftover Metra carpet and carpeted under the storage compartment.

The front TAM tweeters are mounted in the original locations in the dash using these Autohaux mounts and I painstakingly removed and reapplied the foam rings from the factory tweeters because I couldn't find new ones to order anywhere. Due to their 'M'-profile design, they image nearly perfectly and it almost sounds like there is a center dash speaker in the truck now. They blend very well rather than having harsh directional hotspots in non-ideal mounting locations like this. I have them set to -3dB.

With this install I also rewired all 4 corners with KnuKonceptz 12g wiring which was one of the least fun things I've ever had the pleasure to do. At least the Focal's match my wheels.

Pic of how I have the 4awg power cable to the amp ran and how the JL waterproof MAXI fuse block fits on the OE auxiliary fuse panel:

Lastly, some photos of the Pioneer flush-mounted using the factory brackets, bass knob under the parking brake and me struggling to tune the VXi DSP:

Overall the install went well, even though it took forever. All the wiring is hidden and aside from the Pioneer you can't visually tell anything has been changed. I spent a while securing and felt-taping every possible area that could generate rattles during the install and so far I don't have any from the system. Greatsuccess.mpeg. These Focal Flax speakers already sound fantastic, very natural (probably due to the natural fibers in the cones) and precise. My DSP tune isn't perfect right now but once I figure out how to better balance everything the end result should be incredible. I don't need a system that you can hear from 5 blocks away, I just want something with proper clarity and enough bass so that you can feel its presence. Can't wait to see how it performs once I finish tuning. It's getting there but I have some hours left to dial it in. I have a very similar speaker setup in my tC (Focal DFS w/ Stealthbox and 2 amps) which sounds amazing as well, but this VXi with it's DSP settings is a whole new beast to figure out. So many parameters to configure. Should be worth it in the end.

    EDIT (a few weeks later):

Been on these tuning settings for a week or so now and I really like how everything sounds with them. Clear at all volumes and great across all the different music I listen to. Not sure why it's blurry but hopefully it helps if anyone is curious.

Bro! That is my dream of a perfect setup! I don't have the funding and skills like you do, congrats! Please let us know how it sounds! I am hoping that I can save enough to install Pioneer HU this summer. I am happy for you, looks nice and clean.

Spent some more time tuning the DSP yesterday and I think it has a pretty solid tune in it now. I was able to recover all of the low end I was looking for and it sounds like a concert is going on inside my truck. Sounds fantastic with multiple genres (rap, rock, trance) and the clarity is unreal at all frequencies. I might tweak it a bit more, but it is sounding pretty incredible now. I am blown away by the capabilities of this small amp and how much clean bass you can get out of this little 10tw3 once it's tuned properly. There was for sure a learning curve with this setup, but the goal was to put the (badass) system in my tC to shame and I definitely accomplished that.
