Looks like I pushed my girl too hard offroading.. heard a snap then grinding. Thankfully was next to a parking lot, so I didn't do more damages, but..

Any guesstimates on how bad this is going to cost me? She has 250k, so does it even make sense (even though I just replaced the water pump last week)?

A used CV is about $60 from pick and pull. About a half hour to an hour to replace it.

Seems like it would take alot more work than that, especially for a guy with minimal tools or experience

I'm also worried about the oil leaking where the axle goes into the differential... I worry there is damage there too.

the only special tool needed is a 35mm socket for the axle nut. I’m highly doubtful anything on the differential end is damaged. If you’ve never replaced an axle, add 2 more hours for YouTube mechanic achievement patch to be unlocked

The hardest part is getting the dust cap that is over the axle nut off with out bending it up.
And that’s not hard if you have a good sharp wood chisel:thumbsup:
Bust the nut loose, thread the nut back on a little, and Tappy, Tap, Tap.
Remove the 2 LBJ mount bolts for more clearance to remove the CV.
Next take a big pry bar pop the CV out at the differential.

random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
Easy piece, as @6 gearT444E mentioned only thing considered special is the 35mm that you can get at Napa, if you feel “iffy” about the seal ask the guy in the counter for one for the driver side(different than the one in the pass side) cv’s are sold at Napa as well.

This is a 4x4.. does that change it at all? I say differential, but I realize it may be the transfer case (yes, I am a noob, and only have a base understanding). Right after the snap, I could obviously hear the grinding (thought it was a flat at first) and didn't go more than 500ft at a limp..

I saw the guide showing the massive lug nut, but it looked way more complex (packing bearings, etc..); far out of my league.

No bearing to pack. And nothing to fall out.
You literally remove 6 lug nuts.
    Remove the wheel.
    Remove the dust cover.
Remove cotter pin from big nut.
    Remove big nut.
Remove 2 lower ball joint mount bolts
Pull out on the bottom of the spindle and remove hub side of CV.
Pry the CV out of the front differential.

    Reverse process for installation.
