My daughter had 4 cars "totaled" by the insurance company (She was a teen (of course), but to her credit, only 1 was actually her fault). Knowing just about every teen that just learned to drive will end up with a heap at some point, I always got cheap used cars (3 Tercels and 1 Versa). I always searched for the "right one," and got great deals on private sales. We always took full coverage even though they were old and cheap (but good condition) because of the probability.

In all cases, the insurance totaled them because even though the damage (except for once) was REALLY minor - not even more than a couple thousand to fix MAX, it would cost more to fix than pay us off (note - I made a profit each time). At least once, I was sure it would only be a few hundred to fix (bumper, cover, and supports), but each time it was just vended off to the wrecking yard (not even auction). Of course, in those cases it may have been because the cars were so old, but I don't think insurance companies bother with fix/resell - it's just dumped to the wrecking yard at worst or auction at best.
