    Nothing growing here, yet.

The grass is starting to turn green, a little.

    Super verdant green here.

Rain, then warm, then cool rain, warm, rain, cold, rain....typical indeterminate spring in the PNW

Where/who is the fig guy? My fig trees. Unsure. I think they got hurt.

My hops, oh my God. They are taking off like a rocket.

Lots of edible greens, directly seeded, are sprouting nicely.

Nothing from my spud ranch yet. No potato shoots sticking up.

I have to make a couple more beds. One veggie, one flower.

No one here is starting any garden or planting of any sort. Are temps are fluctuating all over the place.

Most of are produce comes from California for stores. Fruits comes in from California or Florida.

Probably end of April, beginning of May Most people start planting.

My wife is the farmer around here. A few weeks ago she pulled up the winter crops: lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, etc., and transitioned to the summer stuff: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc.

I have had figs since 2012, What do you want to know? Generally, figs are the easiest fruit tree to grow.

Take pics of the damage on trees. How old are they? My oldest is 11 years and it is dying of old age, which sucks, because we get 10 gallons of figs from it every year, others do not produce as much.

Plant flowers in your veggies. Marigolds to help with pests, nasturtiums to help with pollinators.

The figs had some green tips and I think frost killed the tips. It's just the battle against the weather. Need more heat, some warm comes then - now this AM 31°F. This is their 2nd year so I don't have fruit expectations. Last summer they leafed out OK. We will see. Desert King, Olympia and Brown Turkey are the 3 trees.

Yes marigolds in between the tomatoes really works. We plant borrage and nasturtiums and other flowers to attract pollinators and that also works. Good stuff.

Figs will be fine. My Brown Turkeys and Celeste took some frost damage in the same spots, on the tips. It was just leaves. They will be back. BT is the most frost resistant variety you can get. I plan on planting a couple more of BT.

Figs do not have fruit or flowers per say. What we call a fruit is actually its flower. Figs normally give 2 harvests a year. A small one in the spring and a bigger one in the summer. We lost spring harvest this year, that's all.

Feed them lime, as much as you can. I think I've told that story, but my little Brown Turkey is now over 15 ft tall and over 15ft wide, since it got hold of the #57 gravel pile next to it and sucked all the lime out of it.

Once they start bearing fruit, you will need to pick at least every other day. My old tree I pick daily, and leave half of the fruit on the tree for the birds, too high to reach. Be careful bending branches, they are not as flexible as apple/pear, and will snap easily.

Pick then when they are soft and springy to the touch, not green, and not mushy. At that stage they can be kept in the fridge for several days. I pick for a week and then can. If fruit is ripe, 8 cups of fruit need only 1 cup of sugar and the low sugar pectin.
Fruit can be frozen and canned/made into a pie latter, will put out a lot of juice when thawed.

Soaking them in cold water6+lemon juice to clean. Then lay out on the towel to dry and put them in the fridge.

Are you sure? Olympian is rated to -15°F, BT -10°F, No matter, did not get that cold.

Yes I limed all 3 heavily per your instructions before, AND mixed in some course sand. Also adding heat retaining rocks in the 4x4 foot beds.

    Thanks!!

I could be wrong. I have not seen Olympia for sale in GA. BT is the coldest rated I have seen here.

Now I want to see fruit from Olympia. BT is large (in the pics in my post) and brown when ripe. Celeste is smaller and purple when ripe.

Nice. I will need to research it more, may need to plant it and BT next, not 2 BTs. You did good by planting different varieties, hedge your bets.

PS in the 3d pic in the link, the whole fig, it was picked too early, needed a couple more days, color just started to come in. Skin will be tougher and it will be less sweet.

    Bummer.
Do you have enough trees left for cross-pollinating?
